Isha volunteers move into action quickly to help rural communities in Coimbatore by providing free meals to the vulnerable population, medicinal drinks and PPEs to frontline workers, as well as free immunity-boosting Yogic practices to the general public.
What We Do
With the second wave of COVID-19 ravaging India, Isha Foundation is increasing interventions countrywide by coordinating with local government bodies and other NGOs to provide critical support in the cities of Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi, in addition to the continued Isha COVID Action in the city of Coimbatore and its neighboring villages, which began in April, 2020.
As an urgent response to the pandemic, immediate support has been mobilized to aid 150,000 people in rural and tribal communities surrounding the Isha Yoga Center, covering 17 village councils and 43 villages, based on the current on-ground situation and in consultation with government agencies.
Isha COVID Action’s major interventions include:
Free transport for poor patients to hospitals and COVID Care Centers
Distributing masks, PPE kits, and other safety consumables to vulnerable frontline workers and government hospitals, besides distributing these to households in specific areas of Coimbatore
Providing supplementary nutrition food packets to doctors, nurses at government hospitals and police, and other frontline workers to rejuvenate and motivate them to continue fighting for the lives of thousands
Providing insurance cover for vulnerable sections like sanitary and frontline workers
Offering Isha Vidhya Schools to the Tamil Nadu Govt. as COVID Care Centers if the need arises
Besides the above, as the situation demands, Isha foundation would continue to respond to the on-ground requirements of the Local Government bodies.
Operating COVID Support Lines, Telemedicine facilities with the support of volunteer medical professionals worldwide
Offering immunity-boosting Yogic practices –Simha Kriya, Sashtanga, and other simple Yogic practices are offered globally through online sessions and through in-person sessions to members of security forces, medical staff, and people in the neighboring villages.
Research studies from Harvard Med School, University of Texas & PGIMER found that the practices reduce psychological stress, and suggest that this can lead to improved immunity.
Providing Dignity in Death
The families of deceased COVID patients are undergoing tremendous challenges due to the loss of a loved one and a harrowing experience during cremation, on account of an overburdened infrastructure. Isha can facilitate and serve the community by providing a dignified cremation to the deceased.Isha’s initiative of providing mortuary vans to transport the deceased and offer meaningful rituals for the dead at the Isha crematoriums aimed towards providing dignity in death. However, with the death rate climbing, our crematoriums and vans are running at full capacity and the infrastructure is falling woefully short. There is an urgent need to upgrade the capacity of 18 Isha crematoriums. We urgently need financial support to serve this critical need in the community.
Upgrade capacity of 18 Isha crematoriums
Need 40 additional mortuary vans
Addition of 25 makeshift crematoriums with temporary furnaces to augment the current capacity
We urgently need financial support to serve this critical need in the community.
