Not Just a Housewife
In this week's Spot, Sadhguru posts an excerpt from a recent "In Conversation" with Juhi Chawla on the question of motherhood and career. Sadhguru says, "I have asked many ladies, 'What are you doing?' They say, “'Oh, I am just a housewife...' They do not seem to understand the significance of being able to nurture two or three new lives." Sadhguru describes the responsibility and beauty of being a mother, and about whether mothers should also have a career. Enjoy!

On the occasion of the anniversary of Sadhguru’s enlightenment, Sadhguru writes, "I bow to Chamundeshwari, for at her feet I attained to grace, though unintended. On this day, my special blessings to all." -Sadhguru

Below is an excerpt from In Conversation with the Mystic, Juhi Chawla with Sadhguru on "Love and Life."

Juhi Chawla: Today, many women in our modern society are stepping out and having a career. What do you think about women having a career, managing a home and being financially independent?

Sadhguru: Every woman should do what she wants to do as an individual. It should not be made into a trend in society or be the only right thing to do in the world. I think that if a woman intends to have two children and raise them, it is a full time job.  I am not saying she should not go out and work. If she wishes to, as an individual, she is free to do what she wants. But having two children is not about reproduction. You are manufacturing the next generation of people. How the world will be tomorrow will be determined by what kind of mothers you have today.

I have asked many ladies, “What are you doing?” They say, “Oh, I am just a housewife.” I say, “Why do you say, you are just a housewife?” They do not seem to understand the significance of being able to nurture two or three new lives. It is a very important job. My mother never went about telling me, “I love you” or anything of this kind. It is just that she simply lived; it never occurred to us whether she loved us or not. Such questions never came because her whole life was dedicated to us. We know she lived for us. And I cannot imagine that part of my life without her being around.

My mother never played an active role in what I am, but without the ambience that she set for me¸ I would never be what I am. She gave her life to set that ambience, knowing fully well it will play out somewhere. That has been the most important thing she did for me. Why would anybody think this is not an important job? In early life, we never had to think about anything. She simply made sure the background was always there. We lived unconcerned about what was happening around us; this is what gave me the possibility of sitting with my eyes closed for days on end.

Right now, we have made the whole world into economics. Money is just procurement of things that you need. Men were procuring and women were talking about the more beautiful aspects of life. Now, women also want to procure. If there is such an economic need in the family – fine, she must do it -- but it must not be set up as something better to do. If she sings, plays music or cooks -- or if she just loves her children -- she lives beautifully, like a flower. It is good enough.

It should not be that a woman is only doing something valuable if she earns money. If there is an economic need, or if she has a passion for it, she can do it. But let us not set up such values in the world. Society would not be evolving; it would be regressing by making survival more important than the aesthetics of life.

Love & Grace

Women, apart from raising the kids, actively took part in working in the farm to support their family from age old days. Right from sowing of seed to harvesting, they played an important role in agriculture. They also have main role in taking care of domestic animals like cow, poultry etc..Our Indian traditional system did not limit them to work only as house wives. Now also in rural areas, they are doing job as well as raising children.Working women as per me is not a new concept at all. Agreed that looking after kids, feeding them and up-bringing is a very important job and mother's role in this is great. But after the children are something like 5 years and they are able to go to school, women should contribute to the family, to the society and to the country. Imagine if a woman becomes a doctor and do not use what she learnt, it is a great loss to the society, and to the country.

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. <a href="http://www.SEORankingLinks.xyz&quot; rel="nofollow">Seo Plugin</a>

Namaskaram Sadhguru.

Women are respected for the motherhood- the 'Peak of feminine', without a good mother there is no good child possible, it is a very important activity. If men fail to understand the importance of that, women need to educate men....but if women themselves don't understand it there is no salvation for upcoming generations. Quite often there is a saying doing rounds in 'Modern' society "Whatever a Man can do a Woman can do", but I have never seen any Man saying the vice versa "Whatever a Women can do, a man can do", please see if the feminine would be respected only for her capacity to imitate men, then it is very much meaning that women are inferior otherwise, it is the most male- chauvinist ideology, unfortunately the same is celebrated by 'Modern' Women themselves..... what is really modern when we eradicate the beauty of feminine???, its just rubbish idea.....what is feminist idea - when it expects women to do and behave like men....., men or women should follow their passion not peer pressure compulsions....or falsified insane social prejudices which eradicates the very tender and beautiful quality among humans who are the most important link in any generations... 'the feminine' .......

Namaskaaram Sadhguru. Well said, as the context in which women can observe position themselves is well explained.

Still, as you have rightly said, the economics is playing a crucial part in deciding one's individual existence in the present western-thought-dominated world. It is really challenging to balance, understand and experience the roles accordingly.

Namaskaram Sadhguru,
You explain the significant role of women in raising their children. My humble question being, aren't men equally responsible for raising their children? Leaving aside the monetary/economic aspect, there are women who pursue a career out of passion. In that light, why should it be the responsibility of the mother alone to nurture the next generation? Also leaving aside the biological needs that are provided to the child from the mother, why can't several aspects of inspiration, education, love etc be also equally shared by the father? How does this affect the value of our society?
