Making Corruption Cosmic
In this week’s Spot Sadhguru talks about corruption and how the core of corruption is limited identification; “The whole spiritual process is just to take an individual from a limited identity to an all inclusive possibility……There is nothing here that is “me” or “mine.” If one becomes meditative, if one becomes a devotee, they are incapable of being corrupt”.

Sadhguru - Making Corruption Cosmic

Dear Sadhguru, as I move into a position of power, how can I avoid becoming corrupted by it?

Power doesn’t corrupt, people are corrupt. When they get empowered, it becomes super visible. When the microscope is not on them, you don’t see it. But someone who is not corrupt will not become corrupt.

First, let us understand what corruption is. If there is something called “me” and there is something called “you,” corruption has started because what is “me” is more important than what is “you.” Once “me” comes, “what is mine” and “what is not mine” will come. Once “this is mine” and “this is not mine” comes, corruption is deepened. If you get very attached to “what is mine” and “what is not mine” then it becomes well established. Like this it goes on.

Essentially, corruption means, with whatever acts of wellbeing a human being commits, he is excluding somebody.

That is why, all these years, I have been saying, “Let us make corruption cosmic!” The nature of who you are is such that you have to identify with something. If you identify with just the body, one level of corruption. When you get married, you identify with two bodies -- corruption multiplied. When it becomes two, the corruption becomes a little bit bigger; people can see the conspiracy. Family is the first form of corruption. I am not speaking against it, I am just telling you. Suddenly, “what is ours” and “what is not ours” becomes important. Then comes community, nation, race, religion…different levels of corruption.

Essentially, corruption means, with whatever acts of wellbeing a human being commits, he is excluding somebody. If you have something, you want to give a little more to this person, and a little less to that person. This is corruption. The question is whether it is a socially acceptable form of corruption or not. For example, if something happens to your children, buckets of tears will come. But when other children are on the streets without clothes or food in their bellies, and not even a teardrop comes to you, you are corrupt. If we make you the prime minister, your corruption will be reported in the media. Right now, your corruption is not worth reporting because it is not of much consequence to other people. Anything that you empower gets blown up into a larger dimension of corruption. But don’t wait to become a prime minster and then check out whether you are corrupt or not.

Most of the corruption on the planet is because you are identified with something limited. Limited identity is corruption. If you make your identity yourself, you will rob the person next to you. If you make your identity for your community, you will do things for your community at the cost of some other community. If you are identified with the nation, you will do good things to your nation at the cost of another nation. That is not perceived as corruption, but it is corruption. Corruption is not a lack of morality. Corruption is essentially a limited identity.

The whole spiritual process is just to take an individual from a limited identity to an all inclusive possibility, not just intellectually but experientially. When you say, “I am a devotee,” it means that “I have either dissolved” or “I am willing to dissolve.” There is nothing here that is “me” or “mine.” That is why we are striving so hard to reach the powerful in the world. If one becomes meditative, if one becomes a devotee, they are incapable of being corrupt.

on a lighter note...i see corruption happening right here. are you dividing the world into east and west? :-P

absolutely empowering at the same time its very hard to digest. because "Limited identity is corruption" "Corruption is essentially a limited identity" these lines unsettles and disturbs peoples comfortability including me to a point which will make people insecure. me a meditator feeling that, i can imagine what these lines can do to a normal person(non-meditator)/people.

yes it is possible only "The whole spiritual process is just to take an individual from a limited identity to an all inclusive possibility, not just intellectually but experientially. When you say, “I am a devotee,” it means that “I have either dissolved” or “I am willing to dissolve.” There is nothing here that is “me” or “mine.” That is why we are striving so hard to reach the powerful in the world. If one becomes meditative, if one becomes a devotee, they are incapable of being corrupt."

give me the strength and will, let yours/lingabhairavi/dhyanalinga's grace descend upon me for the ultimate possibility!!

Power does corrupt ,and a very strange "definition" of corruption from Sadhguru. This article despite its wisdom, misses the main point of the nature of power in the human domain, the domain of the ego; when entrusted to
the human ego, power can, does, and will corrupt. The history of Humanity is a grand out-picturing of such corruption. The willingness of millions to go to war because a certain leader(s) decree it so, why?, in most cases because, they, the leaders had the power to do so, not because war was necessary or essential to a Nations survival, but leaders' concerned with their Nation's, or their own "position in the world hierarchy of power, "believed" it necessary. More depth and insight are
necessary if this subject is to be addressed adequately. The article is too casual and "New Agey".

Namaskaram Sadhguru I think we need to change from "Isha" to "inclusive" :-D

He is just a thinker and philosopher, in the West he would be liked and respected, even have fans and followers ... in the East he is practically worshipped ... and commercialized and exalted to a distasteful inordinate
degree. East is weird.

That's exactly what he is talking about in the article. To mitigate corruption, make it cosmic. The problem arises when you think he is talking philosophy rather than a method. What he's giving is the solution. And it will only work if every one utilizes it. Every other solution that humanity has come up with since time immemorial to battle dishonesty has obviously not worked if we are still faced with corruption today. If we keep dismissing such articles as esoteric "timepass," then we'll never get anywhere.

As someone who face real corruption, I totally disagree with your theory. In fact, I believe your theory is corrupted itself, because at the back of it, it calls upon devotees to surrender their material else they be seen corrupted by you, whereas the only thing a true master will ask them to surrender, is the mind. Your theory, is not practical and has zero relation to Brahaman knowledge. I am willing to debate you on it any time.

I think this caught the crux of whole debate. What people are objecting to is just the "individual Material enrichment as result of favor against exvlusion"
But much larger issue of social corruption i.e. materialism over real charity has become socially acceptable.

I think the problem with all of us we are kind of conditioned to always look for temporary fixes and never willing to see the root cause. What Sadhguru is trying to point out at the root cause and here we again thinking about escalating corruption. Humanity is already on the precipie and chance of recovery very remote.....And we are the generation in transition....next gen is surely gonna bear the brunt....

"If you have something, you want to give a little more to this person, and a little less to that person. This is corruption."
Too idealistic?

Concept of charity is a curse on humanity......All the resources of the
earth belong to everyone (all living beings) and everyone has equal
right. Who are we to give charity to others? Did we really created the
food, the water, clothes on our own out of think air? It is our
limited family identity born out of the insecurity of our illusory ego
that has created this acquisitive society and then the same ego has
created another concept of Charity out of the guilt to hide its
acquisitiveness.

It is well established that being a devotee or ready to sacrifice is most desired solution of keeping oneself corruption-free.

I think more practical aspects were discussed during the in conversation event with Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan. I think its available in youtube.

You doubting idiots.. you didn't understand what sadhguru is saying..he is saying in essence there is nothing called a corrupt and non corrupt..eveyrthing is a state...either you are corrupt when attached to something or non corrupt when dissolved. Stop comparing the dictionary meaning to what he said.

There are many people who worship him in the West too. I actually feel he has more following out side the country. You havent seen it I suppose. His following increased tremendously once they saw his following in the west.

Good one, U got it !!!

And then there are those who get into all kinds of neurotic behavior because they want to imitate the higher states of consciousness that Sadhguru talks about when in reality they are not developed enough to anchor it. That creates so many phony people who want to care about the good of all while putting their own needs aside until one day they wake up and resent for all that they have missed...I think the solution for our social problems can be found and implemented from whatever state or level of consciousness that we are in. Accepting wherever we are in the evolution of our consciousness but with just consideration for others and the society that we live in, we can bring corruption down. If one is too selfish and want to dominate others, they actually need some psychological help. If we really look at our society, there's competition in schools for grades, in the world for jobs, etc. We need to bring the competition down and make people feel they belong to a community or a society..

I noticed that whenever people try to reveal corruption, the corrupted people show nasty behavior with self-corrective lies, some get agressive, some don't know why they are the way they are and other people admit they act(ed) wrong.
Pranam Sadhguru, you said " Corruption is essentially a limited identity."
I had to think about this and it hit me, often my grandmother told me not to interfere with others and pray atleast for all of them to have an honest, peaceful and blessed live. Don't fall into sweet or gossip talk. I guess corruption attracts corruption like kids to candy.

4 years 2 months ago

This is all esoteric and nice. We all know what corruption is, and is not. However, the practical question is - In this prevailing climate of escalating corruption, what can be done to mitigate it? What is the common sense solution that will work?

4 years 1 month ago

Pranam Sadhguru.
When you are corrupt you rob for self from others.
when you are corrupt and have a family - u rob for self and family from others.
when you are corrupt and have a family and communal - you rob other community for self, family and community....and goes on....

“Let us make corruption cosmic!”
-Now whom(part of cosmic) will you rob to provide for whom(part of cosmic)...
The text from sadhguru is in above sense....

I agree with your comment @ Ram. And would request the Blog administrator to put it up to Sadhguru for his view.
