Rudraksha - Everything You Need to Know About Rudraksha
Sadhguru speaks about the Rudraksh and the importance of using a genuine Rudraksh.

A rudraksha is the seed of the Eliocarpus ganitrus tree and plays an important role in a spiritual seeker's life. Sadhguru looks at the various types of these beads and their benefits, including the panchmukhi and ek mukhi.

Read in Hindi : रुद्राक्ष
రుద్రాక్ష

Sadhguru: Rudraksha is the seed of a particular tree species which usually grows at a certain altitude in the mountains – mainly in the Himalayan region. Unfortunately, most of these trees were used to make railway sleepers, so there are very few of them remaining in India. Today, they are mostly found in Nepal, Burma, Thailand or Indonesia. They are there in some parts of the Western Ghats in South India, but the best quality ones come from a certain altitude in Himalayas because somehow the soil, atmosphere, and everything influences it. These seeds have a very unique vibration.

Rudraksha Malas

Usually the beads are strung together as a mala. Traditionally, they believe the number of beads is 108 plus one. The extra bead is the bindu. There must always be a bindu to the mala, otherwise the energy becomes cyclical and people who are sensitive may become dizzy. An adult should not wear a mala with less than 84 beads plus the bindu. Any number over that is fine.

If you take cold water baths and are not using any chemical soap, it is especially good for the water to flow over it and upon your body.

When you string them, it is best that they are strung with either a silk thread or a cotton thread. If you wear it with a thread then it is good to take care to change the thread every six months. Otherwise one day the thread may snap and your 108 beads will go all over the place. If you want to use copper, silver or gold also it is fine, but what happens most of the time is, you take it to the jeweler to do it. When the jeweler ties a knot with a gold wire or whatever, usually they tie it too tight and close and the inside of the rudraksha cracks. I have seen, despite telling people to tell the jeweler, when they bring it back to me after getting it done, about 30-40% of the time it is broken. It is very important that you make sure it is loose. It should not be tightened too close, because if the inside crumbles with the pressure, it is no good.

The mala can be worn all the time. You can even wear it when you shower. If you take cold water baths and are not using any chemical soap, it is especially good for the water to flow over it and upon your body. But if you are using chemical soaps and warm water, it becomes brittle and will crack after sometime, so it is best to avoid wearing it at such times.

Benefits of Wearing Rudraksha

For someone who is constantly on the move and who eats and sleeps in various places, rudraksha is a very good support because it creates a cocoon of your own energy. You might have noticed that when you go to a new place, sometimes you can fall asleep easily, whereas in certain other places you cannot fall asleep even if you are physically tired. This is because, if the situation around you is not conducive to your kind of energy, it will not let you settle down. For sadhus and sanyasis, places and situations could trouble them because they were constantly moving. One of the rules for them was never to put their head down in the same place twice. Today, once again, people have started eating and sleeping in different places because of their business or profession, so a rudraksha can be helpful.

Another thing is, sadhus or sanyasis living in the forest cannot drink water from just any pool because many times in nature, the water may be poisoned or contaminated with certain gases. If they were to drink it, it might cripple or even kill them. If a rudraksha is held above the water, if the water is good and drinkable, it will go clockwise. If it is poisoned, it will go anticlockwise. It is also a way of checking the quality of food. If you hold it above any positive pranic substance, it will move in a clockwise direction. If you hold it over any negative pranic substance, it will move in anti-clockwise direction.

Rudraksha: A shield against negative energies

It is also a kind of shield against negative energies. It is possible for some people to use negative energies to cause harm to someone else.

It is also a kind of shield against negative energies. It is possible for some people to use negative energies to cause harm to someone else. This is a whole science by itself. One Veda, the Atharvana Veda, is all about how to use energies to your advantage and to someone else’s detriment. If somebody who has mastery over this wants to use it, so many things – extreme suffering and even death can be caused.

A rudraksha is a kind of shield against this. You may think nobody will do negative things to you, but it is not necessary that it should be targeted at you. Let us say somebody did it to the person sitting next you, but he is not receptive to it. Now you may get it because you are sitting next to him. It is just like when two people are shooting at each other on the street, they do not intend to shoot you, but you may get shot. Similarly these things also can happen. It is not intended for you, but it can happen if you are in the wrong place at the wrong moment. There need not be a huge fear about such things, but a mala is a kind of protection from that.

Ek mukhi, panchmukhi Rudrakshas & more

The number of faces a bead can have varies from a single face up to 21 faces. They are used for different purposes, so it would be improper to just buy something in the shop and put it on the body. Wearing the wrong type could disturb one’s life. A lot of people want to wear an ek mukhi, which has only one face because it is very powerful. You yourself have many faces. When you have many faces, if you wear an ek mukhi, you are asking for trouble.

Five-faced beads or panchmukhi is safe and good for everyone – man, woman and child.

People say if you wear an ek mukhi, you will leave your family within twelve days. Whether you leave the family or not is not the issue, it is just that it will make your energies in such a way that you will want to be alone. It doesn’t make you compatible to be with other people. If you have to wear other kinds of special beads, it is best that it is received from someone who knows these things, not just buying from the shop and putting it on your system.

Five-faced beads or panchmukhi is safe and good for everyone – man, woman and child. It is for general wellbeing, health and freedom. It lowers your blood pressure, calms your nerves and brings a certain calmness and alertness in your nervous system. Children below 12 years of age can wear six-faced beads. It will help them calm down and be more focused. Above all they will receive the right type of attention from the adult.

The Gauri-Shankar is a certain kind which brings balance between your Ida and Pingala. Generally, people believe it will bring them prosperity. Prosperity need not necessarily mean just money. It can come in so many ways. You may not own anything but still you can be prosperous in your life. If you are a balanced person and you function sensibly in your life, prosperity may come. It happens when energies function well. A Gauri-Shankar balances and activates your Ida and Pingala.

If you have chosen to purify your life, a rudraksha is a good tool and aid, a little support on the way. When someone is walking the spiritual path, he wants to use every little support on the way to enhance himself, and it is definitely a very good support. A guru usually energizes a rudraksha in different ways for different kinds of people. For people in family situations, it is energized in one way. If you want to be a brahmachari or a sanyasi, it is energized in a completely different way. People in family situations should not wear something energized in a certain way.

Finding Genuine Rudraksha Malas

Traditionally, malas were always dealt with by people who held it as a sacred duty in their lives. For generations, they did only this. They also made their living out of it, but fundamentally it was like a sacred duty of offering it to people. But once the demand became too much, commerce came in. Today in India, there is another seed called badraksh which is a poisonous seed, which grows extensively in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and that area. To look at, both these seeds look the same. You cannot make out the difference. Only if you take it in your hand and if you are sensitive, you will know the difference. This should not be worn on the body, but these are being sold as authentic beads in many places. So it is important that you get your mala from a trusted source.

Editor's Note: Rudraksha malas available at Isha Shoppe are prepared with great care and are consecrated and energized for maximum benefit.

Size of a panchamukhi does not matter, just that the price varies. You wear a size thats comfortable to you.

Yes, do the soaking process as you have mentioned. No need of Japa before wearing.

You wear while eating non-veg.

Dear All,
I received 5mm panchamuki rudraksha mala today from isha shoppe online.
But it has 145 beads.
I am bit confused, plz advise what to do?
I was expecting 108+1.

1 year 11 months ago

Its ok to have more than 108, no problem with that. You can wear. If you're so particular, can remove the extra beads and use them if you happen to lose any.

1 year 11 months ago

Its not inauspicious. Please leave the beads in a river and get a new one.

1 year 11 months ago

Please see this paragraph from the article: "Usually the beads are strung together as a mala. Traditionally, they believe the number of beads is 108 plus one. The extra bead is the bindu. Can we wear Rudraksh and Tulsi mala together? I have heard different views for this. Also I wear Linga Bhairavi pendant, which is of copper. Is it safe to wear Rudraksha with that?

2 years 6 months ago

Namaskaram,
I do not believe it would be a good idea to share one's rudraksha mala. Once we wear these beads, it generally creates a positive spiritual vibrational 'aura' around us.
It would be best if you purchased a brand new one from Isha shoppe and give it to your family and/or friends.

Its stated that "A guru usually energizes a rudraksha in different ways for different kinds of people. For people in family situations, it is energized in one way"

So, when we buy the Rudhraksha Mala from Isha Shoppie, its is 'not energized by SADHGURU for a specific life situation'.
At least, nothing is mentioned on Website, to believe it is energized by SADHGURU or catogarized as 'energized for family situation or energized for Sanyasi situation etc.,'
And nothing is mentioned in the Website that these are from Himalayas & good quality ones as well.

So the question that I get all the time is - how effective or useful it is to buy this Rudhraksha Mala sold at Isha Shoppie?

1 year 11 months ago

You can wear both.

You can re-string them and wear.

Namaskaram. I recently got Gauri shankar rudraksh from isha. I already used to wear the panch mukhi mala so i got the gauri shamkar placed in that mala only. Close to the bindu. Is it okay to wear it like that? When j wear my mala bindu comes in the fromt, close to the chest. But i read that gauri shankar is advisable to be touching on the back of the neck. Please clear my doubts. Thankyou

No, that is not true. Many saadhvis wear it. My grandmother also used to wear it. And so do I. It gives me peace.

It is your mind's way of communicating with you. Nothing to do with Rudraksha. For most of us, it helps in concentration and acts as a companion. There are no supernatural powers in a Rudraksha.

4 years 1 month ago

In Sadhguru's book, "The Mystic Eye" (p60) Sadhguru states that the Rudrakshas bought in the shop are not "like that," meaning like the ones kept in the Dhyanalinga. To which shop is Sadhguru referring? I hope it's not the shop at the ashram. I bought several Rudrakshas from a little stall outside the Isha shop when I visited and I was told that they had been blessed in the shrine. Are the ones I bought blessed? Are they safe to wear? The are all panchmukhis. Thank you for responding.

Namaskaram!

One more thing. Its said in the blog, that Rudhraksha should not crack or else, its no good.

But, strangely it is mentioned in the Isha Shoppe website that, these are not perfect & there may be cracks.

So these malas are not perfect, comes with cracks, are not energized for specific situation, not given by Guru....!!!
Over & top, no idea if they come from Himalayas with quality. Its not mentioned.

So, how good, useful, effective are these rudraksha malas, if one has to buy from Isha Shoppe?

Kindly clarify.

Namaskaram,
I don't think "non-veg, alcohol" lifestyle is suitable for someone wearing a rudraksha mala. Please remember that rudraksha beads are meant for spiritual aspirants, who are interested in spiritual matters and changing themselves for the better. Non-veg/alcohol lifestyle is not spiritual, rather it would fall under the "material" lifestyle category. So, in my opinion, it would not be a good idea to wear rudraksha, whilst following such a lifestyle.

The one's at Isha shoppe are placed within the dhyanalinga for quite a while. They are safe to wear. He is talking abt one's that are generally found in shops in many other places I guess.

While I am not making a generalised statement about all shops, in my personal experience I have seen places just selling plastic beads and passing them of as authentic beads.

Is it ok to wear a old rudraksha mala which has been used by someone else before.

1 year 11 months ago

Sorry to have not replied sooner. Yes you can wear rudraksha with more than 108+1. No absolute harm in that. An adult should not wear a mala with less than 84 beads plus the bindu. Any number over that is fine. Please check the article, it has been updated with this information.

1 year 7 months ago

It should be ok, but it may be a little abrasive on the skin, without the cleansing process. If you're ok with that, you can go ahead.

1 year 1 month ago

Sadhguru mentioned that Rudraksha mala should not touch metal. So, better not wear the gold chain and the Rudraksha. You can wear either one or the other.

1 year 11 months ago

Read this paragraph from the above Sadhguru's article: "Usually the beads are strung together as a mala. Any number over that is fine."

Lord shiva himself was avdhoot an avghad... his ganas wore rudraksha and did all kinds of mischevious stuff but had immense respect towards shiva and his essence. Rudraksha is shiva's tears and no aspect of shiva needs any further purification because although residing in this world n universe he is aloof from it. nirakar hote hue bhi shiv sab sakar kar dete hain.

I Just called up Isha Shoppe Customer care.

She said this.

"108+1 is for doing chanting.
For wearing purpose one can wear mala with any number of beads more than 84.
5mm beads mala can't be made with 108+1, because it will become too small.
Hence wearing mala with 145 beads is fine"
Please can some one help me understand is it okay to wear mala with 145 beads ?

Namaskaram! Just got a rudraksha mala. In a hurry in following the instructions to season the new rudraksha mala, allowed the rudraksha mala to soak in ghee for 24 hours but put it in a stainless steel container. After getting up in the morning, realized that Rudraksha should not come in contact with a metal container, so changed it to a glass container. Kind of confused whether i should wear it or not post the seasoning? Kindly help me understand the effects of Rudraksha coming in contact with metal!

There are no such restrictions. It is probably just that rudraksh are often worn by people on the spiritual path who usually dont consume alcohol or non-veg. As such there is no restriction.

Very glad to hear that you will be wearing a Panchamukhi and hope it benefits you greatly in your sadhana. Before wearing you should prepare the Rudraksha mala by soaking overnight in cows ghee and then soak overnight in cows milk. Then wipe off the ghee and then wear the Rudraksha. Depending upon the type of Rudraksha, the size varies. See Isha Shoppe for details.
For the first time, before you wear and after that maybe once in 6 months cleanse the Rudraksha in the following manner:
Soak overnight in cows ghee and then soak overnight in cows milk. Then wipe off the ghee and then wear the Rudraksha.

Thanks for writing to us Donal Doll. If you can, please try Isha Kriya, a simple 12-minute meditation by Sadhguru. You can find this at: http://www.ishafoundation.org/Ishakriya
If you have time, you can do any or all of these Chit Shakti meditations also. http://www.ishafoundation.org/Ishakriya
Would be good, if along with the meditation, you practice daily some Upa-Yoga. You can find the practices online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf5qUhz-FVk

For a normal bead, the thread will pass through one hole of the bead and out the other hole. Like this: --O--

For the bindu, take both the ends of the thread and pass it through one hole, and tie them in a knot at the other end of the hole.
Like this: >O*

I hope the weird graphics are clear. :)

Namaskaram,
First follow a sattvic lifestyle (vegetarianism is important). A rudraksha mala is to assist you in developing your inner well-being. If you have not pursued the spiritual path properly, I do not believe the rudraksha mala would be of any special benefit. Start with doing the "Inner Engineering" program with Sadhguru
