There is something called organ comfort. There are various aspects to this. Just to handle one aspect of it - see right now, most of the vital organs of the body are in the chest and abdomen region. These organs are not rigid, they are not fixed with bolts and clams. They are loose, hanging in nets. Only if you sit with your spine erect, your organs will be in the maximum possible comfort.

If you travel 1000km on a reclining chair, your lifespan will come down by at least three to five years...
Now, the modern idea of comfort is to lean backward and slouch. If you sit in such a posture, your organs will never be at comfort. They will not function the way they need to. This is especially true if you eat a full meal and sit in a reclining chair. A lot of travel happens in reclining chairs. I would say, if you travel a thousand kilometers on a reclining chair in a car, your lifespan will come down by at least three to five years. This is because the organs suffer so much, their ability to function will go down dramatically or you will at least be impaired in some ways.

Keeping the body erect is not because we don’t like comfort, it is because we understand and experience comfort in a completely different way. You can train your muscles to be comfortable, with your spine erect, but you cannot train your organs to be comfortable while slouching. There is no way to do it. So, we choose to train the body, so that our skeletal system and muscular system is comfortable sitting this way.

But when we sleep our posture is straight... So in that case as well, that's the same as sitting upright like Sadhguruji said

Since my childhood whenever I learned from people around me, most of them were their own ideas. I am realizing one by one. Still they fight that they are right. I never tried to make others fool. How to get rid of these so called "Modern Ideologists"???...

I think posture is itself a function of one's energy level. Whenever I am dull, my back weakens. But the opposite also is true in my understanding, i.e. when my back is weak I am not at full energy. But energy is not entirely within my control whereas maintaining posture although difficult is within my reach. Hence, I see maintaining posture as one way to uplift my energies. But having low energy isn't entirely dependent on posture of course. So I keep track of my general internal health such as vitamin supply, overeating, etc.

We should set an example for other people through our actions, rather than advising them. Otherwise we'll be doing the same thing as they are.. Advising and trying to insist our ideas.

I used to think sitting erect was something to do with spine alone and had never thought of other internal organs. This post has certainly motivated me more to sit in good posture.

A little late in the day for a reply. You posted this question 3 years back. Though I am not an expert I will hazard a guess. It is because of weak back muscles. Do back muscle strengthening yogas like "Bhujang Asan" etc.

My pranams sadhguru , i always agree with sadhguru teachings, there is one doubt for me regarding this, then what about sleeping time in a day we sleep for almost 8 to 9 hours, will this posture also effect for orgons function.

If its such a simple thing about body, is the Doctors should know well about this and inform people about the right posture?. I haven't heard any Dr saying this (except for the cases of back pain). Why is it so?
