April 13: Sadhguru Receives the Padma Vibhushan, India’s Highest Annual Civilian Award

Sadhguru Jagadish Vasudev has today (13 April) been conferred India’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, for his contribution to spirituality. President Pranab Mukherjee presented the award today to the yogi and mystic, among others, at a Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

When Sadhguru became aware of the honour in January this year, he said in a statement that the award was a “recognition of over seven million volunteers of Isha worldwide, involved in transmitting the science of inner wellbeing” and “the Tamil people” in particular...

Interview: We asked bestselling yogi Sadhguru how to be happier

Jaggi Vasudev, 59, is the motorcycle-riding, golf-playing Indian mystic and yogi known to the practitioners of Isha Yoga around the globe as Sadhguru.

As the author of more than 30 books, including last year's New York Times bestseller Inner Engineering: A Yogi's Guide to Joy, Sadhguru promotes "yoga taught in its full depth." It's a traditional understanding of the practice and meditation. It's also more mental than physical, he says.

Sadhguru will visit Tampa April 29 and 30 to teach Inner Engineering, the Isha Yoga introductory program that involves a 21-minute-per-day breathing technique. It's his only such appearance scheduled in the United States for 2017.

We spoke to him to find out more about the practices he says can lead to a more blissful life.

The word "engineering" makes me think of design and mathematics, but not yoga or spirituality. Why is your program called Inner Engineering?

Some people complain about the appropriation of yoga in Western culture. It's gone mainstream. How do you feel about the many franchises and classes that have appeared all over the world?

You're known for riding motorcycles and playing golf. Do those activities hold any particular significance for achieving joy or enlightenment?

I've read where you refer to "eating joyously." Is how we eat as important as what we eat?

Stating that the country was still following the systems of an occupied nation, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev on Tuesday said that new systems and processes have to be in place to build a new nation.
He was delivering a lecture on ‘Making of a Nation’ at the Raj Nivas Lecture Series here in Puducherry. “We have crippled ourselves by following the systems of the occupied nation,” he said.

Bureaucratic hurdles

Stating that building infrastructure is important for building a nation, he complained that to raise a building in one’s own land requires no objection from 16 departments. “Why should we get a no objection certificate from 16 departments to build in our own land? Even after four-and-a-half-years they neither give us a objection certificate nor do they tell the reason what they are objecting for,” he said...

Recalling the uniqueness of India as being "a vibrant economy with structured economic approaches", Vasudev said the country had indisputably made great development in infrastructure sectors.

But you build great nations only when you produce great people and the basic nourishment of the people should also be taken care of," he said.

The spiritual leader said, "People should have strong sense of belonging, identity and pride of the nation. People's capability, intelligence and competence should be liberated and should not be controlled. The system and process should be designed for the growth of the nation."

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi said she was Sadhguru's "devotee and student."
