On the occasion of the anniversary of Sadhguru’s enlightenment, we present to you the story of this momentous event in his very own words.

Read in Telugu: సద్గురు ఙ్ఞానోదయం ఆయన మాటల్లోనే…

Sadhguru: One afternoon, I rode up Chamundi Hill in Mysore city and went to a particular rock - a huge rock which was my usual place - and sat there with my eyes open. After a few minutes, I didn’t know where I was. Till that moment, like most people, I always thought this is me and that is someone else. But for the first time I did not know what is me and what is not me. What was me was spread all over the place. I thought this madness lasted for 5 to 10 minutes but when I came back to my normal way of being, four-and-a-half hours had passed. I was sitting right there, fully conscious, eyes open. I sat there at around 3:00 in the afternoon. It was 7:30 in the evening when I came out of it. For the first time in my adult life, tears were flowing to a point where my shirt was completely wet. I was someone who had never allowed a single teardrop to come out of my eyes. But now suddenly, tears were flowing to a point where my shirt became wet.

I had always been happy, that was never an issue for me. I was successful with what I was doing. I was young and had no problems, but now I was bursting with another kind of ecstasy which was indescribable. Every cell in my body was just bursting with ecstasy. I had no words. When I shook my head and tried to ask my skeptical mind, “What's happening to me,” the only thing that my mind could tell me was, “Maybe you are going off your rocker.” I didn’t care what it was but I didn’t want to lose it because this was the most beautiful thing that I had ever touched. I had never imagined that a human being could ever feel like this within himself.

The next time this happened was very significant because there were people around me. I was sitting with my family at the dinner table. I actually thought 2 minutes had passed but actually seven hours had gone by. I was sitting right there fully alert but I had no sense of time. This happened many times. Once, this experience happened for 13 days. In about six week's time, it became like a living reality and everything about me changed in those six weeks. My voice changed, the shape of my eyes changed. If you see photos of me during that time, you can clearly see something changed dramatically in the body. I knew I had to do something, but I didn’t know what. All I knew was the blissfulness that was simply bursting within me; and I knew it could happen in every human being. Every human being has the same inner ingredient. This is possible for every human being.

It is my wish and my blessing this must happen to you. Whether you climb Mount Everest or not, whether you become the richest man on this planet or not, your experience of life on this planet should be pleasant. You must live blissfully and go. This much should happen to every human being. Everyone deserves it and everyone is capable of it.

Namaskaram Sadguruji,
Who else but only you can wish that Enlightenment should happen to all of us. A true Yogi indeed. I remember very clearly that during one his Sathsangs at Chennai on a morning few years ago that was when he has just landed from USA " he said he is human". Instantly one thought crossed my mind was if a great person like Sadguruji says that he is human then what am I. I could not digest myself.

Enlightenment is only achieved when human understanding reaches beyond the human construct of a god or a divinity or a spirituality.

Throughout human history, the subject of Enlightenment has
been written about, discussed, and imaged countless millions of times. Also,
throughout human history the point of focus for Enlightenment is that an
individual must seek the answers outside his or her capacity/ability to utilize
reason and logic reasonable and logically.

The numerous and diverse methods other people have devised for
an individual’s enlightenment come with some nuggets of universal truth, but
also come with biases and misinterpretations which are much more likely to lead
an individual into confusion than they are apt to lead to enlightenment.
Besides, the diverse methods other people have devised for enlightenment come
at a high cost in personal time and treasure.

The worldwide failure of focusing on others for answers is
evident. One need only be immersed in a
day or two of current worldwide news events.
It is clear to all but the head-in-the-sanders that humankind has not
perpetuated Paradise on Earth.

The insanity of applying the same paradigm over and over and
yet having the same disappointing to disastrous results time and time again
just does not seem to register with the worldwide population. En masse they
lead quietly desperate lives scratching for survival, and hoping without real
hope that ‘the next life’ will be better. Well, there is no ‘next life’. This life is the only life that you know is
yours to live.

The methods other people have devised, when accepted by an
individual, initially removes ½ of the power and authority an individual
possesses to utilize reason and logic reasonably and logically, and always
leaves a residual shadow of doubt as a consequence.

All that being said, it must be time for a paradigm
shift. Over the millennia all the
outside angles have been explored, leaving one avenue remaining.

To look inside for the answers appears to be the answer.

But then a question arises; How does an individual go about
looking inside?

That issue and ideas regarding your comments in the next

His wish and His blessing
That enlightenment happens to you and me
Will find fruition in the constant sadhana
That He gracefully offers us 24X7 to be totally free

- Don't put anybody on a spiritual pedestal

- Every human being is already self-realized but is not AWAKENED to it due to SANSKARAS (past impressions or imprints based on ACTION of thoughts, words & deeds)

- Every human is a spiritual agent operating at different degrees of consciousness

- There are as many paths as there are individual souls (we all have a unique DNA, hence a unique spiritual path with the grace of a real GURU who appears to you when you are ready)

- Don't Worry Be Happy (listen to the song, quote by Meher Baba)

Feeling always live
In your mystical magnetic hive

Made me a joyful Drip
Holding your hand with grip

Take me from this endless motion
To dissolve in the deep silent ocean

Oh my Guru!

it takes just the intensity to know the source... Buddha did so much sadhana but didnot get and finally while crossing a river a thought stroked him (when he saw an ant leaning on piece of wood to save herself from drowning) he understood how to meet the source of creation, and after crossing the river whatever tree he came across he sat down (bodhi tree) with a commitment either to know him or lose his body..
and who know Sadhguru has done alot of sadhana in his earlier lifetimes... Buddha too attained enlightenment in 35-40 years of his age.

I would like to know if Sadhguru knows who he was in his previous life. I'm wondering if his experience in this life is due to his past life's already highly attatined realisation. I dont know much about these things, but i'm very curious. Also i would really like to have the privilege of meeting with Sadhguru once and if possible become a student of his. I really, truly appreciate his wisdom and higher knowledge.

It is not the right to place who he was in ythe previous life sinvce you have to be a student of him.

Nice to hear your experience Sadhguru..We all want to get that moment one day.

Yes, he knows his past lives. He was Shri Brahma ji in his past life, a mystic who had good control over all of his chakras. Read his book the mystic musing, you will be amazed! He doesn't talk about it openly though... may be because of ignorant people who still think that body is life.
