About UNESCO MGIEP Distinguished Lecture Series

The UNESCO MGIEP Distinguished Lecture Series invites speakers of global eminence from among the world’s leading intellectuals and policymakers to spark transformative ideas for our shared future. In a world of unprecedented complexity, interdependence and opportunity to talk across boundaries, the discourse for the future will have to be led by the world’s brightest minds in dialogue with youth.

These lectures are expected to inspire a larger international dialogue on a more peaceful and sustainable world, built through better education, inclusive spaces, and global citizenship.

The Distinguished Lectures Series was inaugurated in 2014 and has since become a space for renowned academics, policymakers and practitioners to discuss and debate on topics related to education for peace, sustainable development and global citizenship. The Ahimsa Lecture series was introduced as part of the Distinguished Lectures Series in 2016, in commemoration of the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, which coincides with Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday.

Past Speakers in Ahimsa Lecture Series

The first Ahimsa lecture was given by Dr. Scilla Elworthy, three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and recipient of the Niwano Peace Prize.  She is also the founder of the Oxford Research Group, a non-governmental organisation she set up in 1982 to develop effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policy-makers worldwide and their critics, for which she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize not once but thrice.

The second Ahimsa Lecture by Ms. Tawakkol Karman, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. The theme of the lecture was: “Working Towards Peace Building and Sustainable Development.”
