Bananaa Nation

In this week’s Spot, Sadhguru speaks about the Indian General Election 2014 beginning next month. Examining the pivotal role it will play in India’s future, he looks at the need for every Indian to make an intelligent, considered choice.

India is heading for a momentous election. In many ways, people are labeling it as the “mother of all elections” because this election is going to determine the path that the nation will take.  And at a time like this, a small university in the U.K. has come out with a study. The study says the more stupid and ugly you look, the better the chances of getting elected. This is not my opinion – the study says so. What they are trying to say is, the more pedestrian you look, the more people will feel comfortable that you are just like one of them. If you look too sharp or intelligent, you are dismissed as aristocratic. You don’t belong to the masses. But to solve the problems of a nation, and to prevent a nation from creating problems for everyone else in the world, you need intelligence that is not pedestrian. You need intelligence that is visionary. You need intelligence that can look beyond today’s struggles, and towards tomorrow’s possibilities.

If you are Indian by nationality, you have a tremendous responsibility coming ahead of you because the direction this nation is going will be determined in 2014.

If intelligence is tangled up in today’s issues, that intelligence cannot create a better tomorrow. We need to elect the kind of people who have the needed intelligence to exploit tomorrow’s possibilities today. Not somebody who is talking about solving today’s problems, because today’s problems may not be relevant tomorrow.

Once in a way, when a society gets mired in too many problems, the masses will rise above their own mass mentality and choose someone who is not a part of them, someone who looks like a solution. But otherwise, they always prefer to choose one among them. Someone who looks too sharp, intelligent or beautiful would be an insult. Democracy comes with these problems. With democracy, mediocrity could set into the world. No sparkling genius may happen; everything may become equal. If everything becomes equal, it looks like a just society, but a tremendous injustice will happen because what human beings could create, what they could be will be destroyed. “Everyone cut down to same levels.”  That is not what the fundamental process of democracy is about. But unfortunately it is being rubbed into people in that context today. That everything and everyone is equal – no. No two creatures will ever be equal. We can create equal opportunity, we cannot create equality – it is never, never possible.

We need to elect the kind of people who have the needed intelligence to exploit tomorrow’s possibilities today.

It is very relevant right now because we are trying to evolve a process in the Foundation, rather than handling things on a personal level. Or in other words, we are trying to move to democracy. And the significance of democracy is – the replacement of leadership happens periodically, without much upheaval. But at the same time, the choices will be the choice of the mass. If you look at the most popular movies or music in the world, if you look at the most popular anything in the world, you can clearly see it is very mediocre. It is not of any great quality.

To make this choice more upscale, that we don’t end up with low-grade choices, we have to educate and evolve a large segment of people – whether it is in the Foundation, or in the nation, or in the world, which is not a simple task. It takes a whole lot of effort. But here at the yoga center, it is a living possibility because there is an active spiritual process. We can evolve a huge number of people to a higher level of choice, to a higher level of judgment, so that the choices that we make as a group of people will not be low-grade choices.

Democracy has become popular mainly because a history of tyrants misused their position of power and responsibility. If we had a history of very just, wonderful kings, democracy would not be popular at all. But the world has a history of tyrannical monarchs, dictators, and very cruel rulers. Because of this, we have fallen to a safer mode of governance which is democratic, but not necessarily a better form of governance. For sure it is safer, but not necessarily better, not necessarily more evolved or sophisticated.

If you are Indian by nationality, you have a tremendous responsibility coming ahead of you because the direction this nation is going will be determined in 2014. In my perception, I believe that India as sovereignty, culture, spiritual possibility and economic power has somewhere between ten to twenty years of elbowroom to turn around. After that, things may go out of control, or we could become a real vibrant, progressive nation. Both are possible. Either it becomes a vibrant possibility, or in twenty years’ time, we will end up like many other nations that are referred to with reference to certain fruits, like “banana.”

In Hindi, Banana Republic means “yet to be made.”  Banaya nahi – banana hai. Forever banana is not good. For sixty-five years we have been a developing country – developing and developing and developing. That is not good. Developing should be only for a certain period. If that period stretches too long, then you become a bananaaa nation.

Let us make it happen.

Love & Grace

Namo will fall short of 20 to 30 seats and a lot of small parties will sit on his head.

" For sixty-five years we have been a developing country – developing and developing and developing. That is not good." Agreed, ...so, SadhGuru, do we not need a new group of people to start making some real 'change' for our people who desperately need it ?

Perhaps, as always, he can see what others can't.

Institutions already initiated, but little used by people to educate, evolve and involve themselves in public administration:
- Janaagraha for urban India
-Panchayat Raj for rural india

Understood that its Modi. Very succinctly put.

5 years 6 months ago

I am supporting Narendra Modi for this election as he seems to be the only one interested in changing India for the better, rather than their own personal interests. He would also provide a stable government unlike Kejriwal (just look at what happened in Delhi and he does not have mass support anyway).

I did not get the impression that Sadhguru is supporting Modi in this article. Am I missing something?

A Very timely & Insightful article.

1-India is a Young Aspirational Country.Let's leave mediocrity and aim highest.

2- We need a leader who has a strong conviction for 'Equal Opportunities ' not 'Equality','Economic freedom' not Enslavement through 'Doles' &'Freebies',Record of 'Good Governance' not Otherwise.

3-India is a Plural Country. We need a leader who has a Understanding of Plural and Spiritual Traditions of India.Don't Fall in the trap of 'Political Secularism'.

Let's choose a leader, who we think has the necessary Capability and Intention to take India Forward,Towards Progress,Peace and Prosperity.

Pranam!

I liked the tone of this article, but your Twitter account indicates that you're already against the Aam Aadmi Party. I am an active supporter of theirs and intend to vote for them in Delhi Lok Sabha elections for a multitude of reasons. Guru ji, Arvind Kejriwal isn't anti-capitalism, but anti-cronyism. Why such a critical take on the AAP?

5 years 6 months ago

Kejriwal's ideas seems very apt and idealistic but his time has not come yet as he would not be able to provide stable government due to lack of widespread support to his party. A vote for AAP at this time would be a vote for instability. AAP should first make some real difference in one state before plunging into national level politics. Modi had proven himself already.

From a banana to a Jack fruit
I hope my nation grows
For a slender green shoot
To a big tree of progress that glows.....

Your Argument is shallow.

Namaskaram sadhguru. If you rule this country. It will be like THE DYNASTY OF ASHOKA. People will start living happly. It will be yogic country. Am just syncrysing with that world. My wish.

5 years 6 months ago

He has not seen anything in NM.It is good time for india to have PM like NM.Five to ten years later he will recommend AK.Till then you can do guru bhakti and namo bhakti both.

5 years 7 months ago

Sadhguru has very rightly put across the message in a delicate way.we dont want anarchists who thrive on fake publicity and theatrics like mr.Aravind kejriwal who is secretly funded and controlled by naxalites and foreign forces .800 years of foreign invasion and slavery is enough.we dont want foreign forces to control us again.Modi is the only hope for 1.2 bilion people of this country. This is make or break situation for INDIA.

Brother,Ignorance is Bliss!!Maaya is deceptive...those with myopic vision see not whats behind the veil..just check out cases against likes of Baba Ramdev to know tip of iceberg

Has the sambhavi maha mudhra is directly related to quantum physics I mean aeroscope or astro physics where which we are all part the universe.

5 years 5 months ago

What Sadguru's spiritual work needs to be taken into all parts of the country, for which a good governance is required at all levels in India. One which is transparent, development driven. We need an approach which is hybrid of Modi + AK in the coming years.

5 years 7 months ago

It is plain Truth that Hindu spiritual /religious institutions with business interests desperately need the support of Modi in years to come...sadly,'pedestrian volunteers 'will never realise' and expect to be told whom to vote for.

"Bananaa Nation" This is a "must read"article by every Indian on the eve of General Elections.Sadhguru's vision and forethought are exemplary! This article of Sadhguru must reach as many people as possible. As Sadhguru puts it " if you make right choices right things will happen to you,but if you make wrong choices and want right things to happen......nature does not work like that !" So think twice before you make your choice.God has given us another chance to make right choice atleast this time.Make the best use of it.Good Luck India !

Sadguru, It is very clear from the blog that you want the people to vote Narendra Modi by rejecting Congress and AAP. Have we not seen enough of Congress and BJP? How do you expect the parties which have created the problems for so long to find solutions for the same now? What has changed between then and now that one should think of voting BJP? This is my opinion, I am not convinced from the above facts, maybe you have seen something beyond what a common man like me can ever see.

Sambhavi is more related to neuroscience than astro science !

Blessings ..to vote?ridiculous..God save the country from such ignorant pedestrians...

5 years 7 months ago

No need to ridicule , its one right to ask for blessings from his/her guru for any thing and everything.

5 years 7 months ago

So people think that by asking to vote for an intelligent man who can change the country and actually build a better future, sadhguru is choosing one person. If you think he is choosing one person and that person fits into this description, I dont even know what the fuss can be about! If people can have a problem with truth that is as fundamental as this! God save my country!

Namaskaram Sadhguru cars have changed see one step :D

5 years 7 months ago

I guess u missed his earlier tweet where he said kejriwal is fresh air in the politics...Sadhguru like many others watched what happend durine these 49 days and hence he tweeted against kejriwal. Also do you really think Sadhguru does not understand what anti-cronyism??

5 years 7 months ago

And how many of these cases you think are fraud.....he was tried for mixing human bones also n then ppl like u made a lot of noises. Yes you are right Spiritual needs someone like Modi to their business interest....but you misunderstood their business....it is upliftment of society..

5 years 7 months ago

Bjp governed only for 6 years. For people comparing Congress and BJP. Kejriwal not a choice for India. He is revolter for good not a leader. There is a difference.

I believe I perceived what Sadhguru says and I need a Visionary.

5 years 7 months ago

Sadhguru! you can only do everything what is needed? Politics helps to attain this in a short period. We are there with you to make it happen.

5 years 6 months ago

Buddy as per your advice I checked record of Ramdev and found that he was not convicted in any of the cases.
You Consider getting rid of narrow-mindedness.
Thanks!

5 years 7 months ago

one needs to have a stable government to move forward. not a bunch of agitationist yelling. please the long term vision of the nation not a single point agenda and only being targeted against one party and one business man. it takes persistence and patience to run a government something where AK clearly failed

5 years 7 months ago

I think he has told us how to choose well. That is more important than who we choose.

5 years 6 months ago

Namaskaram Sadhguru,
A lead need not be brilliant, but must have a drive to develop the nation which will make him listen to intellectuals and take the right decision, there are large number of intelligent people in the country without being respected. Next, He needs to be incorruptible, focussed, inclusive.
A balanced growth is 50-50 of capitalism and communism, either extreme will be imbalance, one who is willing to work must be rewarded.
He should be visionary and think ahead for the welfare of country and not for his political party.
Whoever matches the critierion needs to be the Leader...

5 years 7 months ago

Dont you not think thats highly assumptious ? Sadhguru has said he will never tell who to vote for as it is against democratic principles
