On the occasion of World Environment Day (5 June 2010), Isha Foundation's Project GreenHands will receive the prestigious Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar for the year 2008 under the Organization Category at a ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in New Delhi.

Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar (IGPP) is the highest award in India bestowed on individuals and organizations for significant contributions in the fields of environmental protection, conservation, regeneration and awareness creation. The honor carries a cash prize of five hundred thousand rupees and a Silver Lotus Trophy.

Since 2005, over 2 million people joined Project GreenHands in planting 8.2 million trees in over 1,800 communities across Tamil Nadu. This massive expression of concern and commitment for the wellbeing of all is made possible by Isha’s collaboration with State Government and local authorities, NGOs, national and international corporate sponsors, children from over 200 schools and thousands of dedicated individuals. Though the IGPP is a major recognition for the work done by Isha volunteers, partners and well-wishers, the work is just a drop in the ocean when compared to what is needed to restore the environment. Isha hopes this award will inspire many around the world to emulate the same.

Project GreenHands is first and foremost about the well-being of Mother Earth who sustains and nourishes all life on the planet. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2010, Isha calls upon India and the world to renew the love, dedication, and commitment for our planet.
