Save the Weave

Sadhguru: Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about wearing clothing made from organically produced cotton. But human beings have always been doing that. Everything was organic. Even now, in a country like India, it largely is. Organic clothing or organic farming is not some special idea. That is the way it has always been done. It is only in the last few decades that we have given that up because someone changed it for commercial interests. I am not trying to prescribe what someone should wear, but you should look at your life with a certain freedom, without compulsions, and decide.

Why Organic Clothing?

The kind of clothes you wear can impact your physical and mental health and wellbeing. So it is important to look at what the weather is like today and what kind of clothing would be best for your health and wellbeing. But most people are not thinking of their wellbeing. You will see, for example, in a country like India, many people walk around in forty-degrees-centigrade weather wearing black jackets and ties! What you eat, what you wear and how you live are about your wellbeing. Unfortunately, so many people just wear whatever is being put on them without looking at what they should wear and why.

Why organic clothing matters is because there is a huge difference in the way your body functions when you wear synthetic clothing and when you wear organic clothing. You needn’t believe anything that anyone says. Try it out and see how it feels. Wear raw silk or cotton – even your inner garments – for a week and see how your body feels. Then wear something tight and synthetic and check. You will see a big difference in the level of comfort and ease at which your body functions because there is a certain aspect to what wraps the body.

The Benefits of Organic Cotton and Silk

Another thing is, how you can exude who you are is also enhanced or restricted by certain substances. Cotton and silk are best for your system. Particularly raw silk or cotton that is not treated in any way has a certain kind of impact. It is not that if you wear synthetic clothing you will fall dead. You can still meditate and be the same person even if you wear synthetic from top to bottom – but with a little struggle and effort.

Seeing the benefits of organic cotton and taking care of the quality of your clothing may not be very practical for lots of people today because they own enough clothes for ten lifetimes. When you want to have two hundred dresses, you end up buying off the shelf. But if you bring this down to a simpler format, if you don’t mind having eight pairs of clothing and managing life within that, you can choose quality over quantity.

It is time more people choose quality over quantity in every sense. Only then can we save this planet. The problem right now is that people have gone for quantity and there is not enough quantity on this planet. But there is quality. If you choose quality over quantity, we can become finer and finer and there is room for all of us.
