Isha Vidhya’s Michael Alwin – A World Champion in the Making
Isha Vidhya is committed to raising the levels of literacy in rural India, helping disadvantaged children realize their full potential. In this effort, the schools emphasize holistic development of the students, balancing academic pursuit with disciplines like sports, arts, environmental protection and yoga. The students that excel in these fields are encouraged to spend more time pursuing their area of interest and excellence.
The Tamil Nadu Government conducts a World Beaters Talent Spotting Scheme (WBTSS). In this, students from Standards 6, 7 and 8 undergo a series of tests, which are conducted to assess the motor qualities of the students, identify their hidden talents and evaluate their ability in sports activities.
The selected students are then groomed for specialized streams based on their motor qualities and then sent for competitions.
Michael Alwin made Isha Vidhya proud when he was selected for this prestigious program from Tuticorin and was moved to the next stage of tests in Trichy, where he competed with 112 students from different districts.
He won the first prize in 50m, 100m, 300m, long jump and short put! These wins enabled him to move on to the last stage, which he again passed with flying colors, to be selected for training at the Trichy Center.
He and his parents are deeply grateful to Isha Vidhya for preparing him for this opportunity. Not only was his talent recognized and encouraged, but a professionally designed platform was made available to him at the right time.
Michael Alwin is now being trained to participate at the national level as well as global level, including events such as the Asian Games.
Make way, world! A champion is in the making!
