The Green School Movement is spreading in Tamil Nadu! Into its second year now, the Movement, which is part of Isha Foundation’s Project GreenHands (PGH), involves school children and seeks to raise 3 lakh saplings this year. Project GreenHands, Isha Foundation’s environmental initiative, was started in 2003 to raise Tamil Nadu’s green cover to the desired 33% and has a lofty target of planting 114 million trees all over the state. PGH has emerged as a massive grassroots initiative with 1.4 crore saplings planted and cared for by over 20 lakh people so far.

In a collaboration involving the Department of School Education, Coimbatore, Suzlon Foundation as well as Project GreenHands, about 150 schools in Coimbatore are joining the Green School Movement this year, adding to the 200 schools that produced 3.5 lakh saplings in 2011. The participating children are members of the National Green Corps, and will be involved in all the nursery activities: sowing seeds, filling pockets, transplantation, watering, weeding and maintenance of saplings. Each school will produce 2000 saplings every year. These educational nurseries not only produce saplings but also spread awareness among school children about the environment and ecology.
