The Body Remembers All

Sadhguru explains that one of the major reasons for the level of anxiety, insecurity, and depression that is going on right now is because the bodies are confused.

Today, we are living in a culture where it is not necessary that you have lived with one partner all your life. Things have changed. I mean, a partner comes with an expiry date. When you made the relationship you thought this is forever, but within three months you think, “Oh, why the hell am I with this person?” Because it is all going by what you like and what you do not like. Because of this, it is always off and on, off and on. When it is broken and when it is unstable, you will go through enormous pain and suffering, which is totally unnecessary. If you do this exercise of falling in and out of love too often, if you go on playing around with too many people, after some time you will become numb, you do not like anybody because there is something called Runanubandha.

Runanubandha is a certain aspect of karma; it is a certain structure of karmic substance. It happens because of a certain amount of meeting and mingling that happens between people. Wherever there is a certain amount of meeting and mingling, some runanubandha is created. Especially when two bodies come together, the runanubandha is much deeper. It is a kind of recording in the body; the body is keeping a record of everything that has happened. If intimacy happened with another body, it is keeping a record of that particular kind of energy.

Now because the body remembers, if there are multiple partners, the body slowly gets confused over a period of time and this confusion will tell in your life in a million different ways. Your mind is confused, but you are living with that somehow. If the body gets confused, then you are in deep trouble.

In many ways, one of the major reasons for the level of anxiety, the level of insecurity, and the level of depression that is going on right now is just that the bodies are confused. After some time, you do not need any reason to go nuts. People are just going nuts without any reason because the body itself is confused.

Body gets confused with multiple intimacies, that is one thing. Another thing is the type of food that you eat. Whenever a little affluence comes, people think they have to eat everything in a single meal. In India, orthodox people never ate more than two or three items in a meal, and those three items were always matched together, not mismatched food. People understood the body so well that in our homes, they knew that when they cook a particular vegetable, they will make only a particular kind of curry. When they cook this vegetable, another kind will never be made because traditionally, they understood that if they put this and that together, the body gets confused.

As young boys, we were trained – if we go to the market, how we should pick up the vegetable. These days it is totally gone, but when I was young they trained me – when we go to the market, “If you buy this vegetable, you do not buy that because these two cannot be eaten within a span of two days. If you have eaten this, you should not eat that,” because the body will get confused. Once your body gets confused you will go haywire in so many ways. This understanding was always there.

What I see is, if you go to any affluent dinners, it has become madness. Recently in one of the events, someone was very proudly announcing that they have 270 different varieties of food. People take a little of everything and eat. The body gets confused with this kind of food.

So these are two major things – people not eating properly and an indiscriminate sense of intimacy with other bodies – which will create certain confusion on the body level which will take a toll over a period of time. “So have I committed a sin? Is this a punishment for me?” It is not on that level. Every action has a consequence. This is not a moralistic reality; it is a certain existential process. If you do certain things with your mind, certain consequences will come. If you do certain things with your body, certain consequences will come.

These are things that have been deeply understood and life was structured in a certain way around that. Now, in the name of freedom we want to demolish everything and suffer. Maybe centuries later we will realize that this is not the way to live.

Just happened to watch a Hollywood film called 'what's your number?' before reading this article. It was about a girl getting anxious about having slept with twenty men in her life, which was apparently twice the national (American) average number of physical relationships a girl is in before marriage! I wonder where the world is going and how much worse off we would be without the wisdom of Sadhguru.

Wonderful... Something tat very much has to be addressed to the people of this time..

But monogamy has never been the norm in this land, Sadhguru. It's only something very recent. Kings had multiple queens, and I believe even commonfolk were allowed multiple spouses. And going by the Draupadi story, the same could hold true for women.

Interesting...I think we have rejected all old customs with out proper understanding

Namaskaram Sadhguru, Thanks to the article. Sadhguru, as u said the body is confused, runabandha, food habits... please give the necessary solutions for all these issues. otherwise this information is creating more confusions and i am afraid to have relations with the people..

thanks

We do things when we are young and realize only later what kind of negative effects these things have on us.  Once we recognize that foolish behavior as young people is causing our older bodies to be confused, is there any way that we can 'cleanse' our bodies of these memories?

Great Article Sadhguru. With regards to food, how do we identify the right combination of  items in our meal ?

say someone has had many partners in his life, but doesn't continue the same lifestyle. Will yogic practises bring down this Runanabandha?, yogic practises like shambhavi mahamudra or isha kriya?

If we recognize later in life that our foolish actions as young people have caused our bodies to be confused, is there anything we can do to 'cleanse' our bodies of these memories?

Our Ancestors were absolutely right when you say about Runanabandha,Excellent Analyse! It's needed to everyone in the world!

We'd like to have recipe's of Isha through Katupoo and the slips issued during the Shambhavi class. But still we're not clear that which can be added to which type of food, because the Sunday meals during the Shambhavi class has every food in the recipe, Is that good to have all together at one time. Sadhguru makes us to confuse that too have the possibilities as he saysConfusion is better than stupid conclusions. In confusion, there is still a possibility. In stupid conclusion, there is no possibility ~ Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
Sadhguru, please make us still clear.

Is this book in English? Some of the books are in Tamil, so most of us don't understand those. :(

I feel, that this is not true. I feel that monogamy is not our nature and also is responsible for a lot of pain, diseases and tragedies...

As usual very perceptive piece from Sadhguru. It fits into what Sadhguru always saying viz. everything that was done in this land be it  co-habiting, food and even our arts & culture was all designed to enhance human consciousness i,e everything should used  as a  tool to attain mukti

I believe this is true that the body does remember. What is it that their bodies are remembering exactly? Maybe, what it remembers is something they are not ready to know or maybe should not know? Is there a spiritual awakening that might be taking place, which the mind the body and society are not ready? A spiritual adolescence? It reminds me of what can happen when one improperly awakens their kundalini.

Have heard that Ayurveda stresses upon
ritucharya or seasonal regimens and
dinacharya or daily regimens as basis of  human health.

If someone on the Isha team reads this, maybe there could be posted in the blog an article providing which foods can be mixed/not mixed...and which are best to eat first in a given meal if that matters. Until then i guess i'll have to do my best at being aware of the body and what it wants. Thank you Sadhguru and Ishas for all of the love and helpful information.

is there any technique that the body forget its intimacy with other bodies

It is such a shame that men (especially in the west) pride themselves on the number of women they have had and boast about it shamelessly. Men's way of life has become so common that now men believe nature has programmed him to plant as many of his sperm as possible.

If only they knew what harm they were doing to themselves.

A wonderful article by  Sadhguru...This should definitely reach everyone...SOMETHIN REALLY IMPORTANT IN ONE's LIFE

@swiss_ml:disqus :     can you tell us clearly what foolish actions  as young people caused your older bodies .thanks,

4 years 3 months ago

AN insightful post, indeed. But it lacks clarity. In the post, Sadhguru only talks about multiple relationships from the point of view of the 'fastrack' generation. But what about cases where one's partner passes away at a young age? Shouldn't such people remarry or enter into a relationship? This question is particularly important if we were to consider the social consequences that widowed women faced in India until sometime ago, or perhaps even now. Please throw light on the same.

Talking about eating the right combo of food, would Isha publish combinations for daily meals? Living in a nuclear family and in a city, most of this knowledge is being lost.
