Why Vegetarian or Vegetarianism?
What is the benefit of eating a vegetarian diet and how it can be easily implemented in a person’s life, is what Sadhguru explores in this article: “What kind of food you eat should depend not on what you think about it, or on your values and ethics, but on what the body wants. When it comes to food, don’t ask your doctors or your nutrition experts. Food is about the body.”

Why Vegetarian or Vegetarianism?

Questioner: What is the benefit of eating a vegetarian diet and how it can be easily implemented in a person’s life?

శాఖాహారం ఎందుకు?

Sadhguru: What kind of food you eat should depend not on what you think about it, or on your values and ethics, but on what the body wants. Food is about the body. When it comes to food, don’t ask your doctors or your nutrition experts because these people keep changing their opinion every five years. When it comes to food, ask the body with what kind of food it is really happy. Try different foods and see how your body feels after eating the food. If your body feels very agile, energetic and nice, that means the body is happy. If the body feels lethargic and needs to be pumped up with caffeine or nicotine to stay awake, the body is not happy, isn't it?

If you listen to your body, your body will clearly tell you with what kind of food it is happy. But right now, you are listening to your mind. Your mind keeps lying to you all the time. Hasn’t it lied to you before? Today it tells you this is it. Tomorrow it makes you feel like a fool for what you believed yesterday. So don’t go by your mind. You just have to learn to listen to your body.

Every animal, every creature knows what to eat and what not to eat. The human species are supposed to be the most intelligent on the planet, but they don’t even know what to eat. Forget about how to be, human beings do not even know what to eat. So, it takes a certain mindfulness and attention to learn to listen to your body. Once you have that, you know what to eat and what not to eat.

Just experiment and see, when you eat vegetarian food in its live form, what a difference it will make.

In terms of the quality of food that is entering you, definitely vegetarian food is far better for the system than non-vegetarian. We are not looking at it from a moral standpoint. We are just looking at what is suitable for the system – we try to eat foods which would make you comfortable in the body. Whether you want to do your business properly or study properly or do any activity properly, it is extremely important that your body is at ease. So, the kind of food with which your body would be most at ease and would not struggle to get nourishment out of, that is the kind of food we should eat.

Just experiment and see, when you eat vegetarian food in its live form, what a difference it will make. The idea is to eat as much live food as possible – whatever can be consumed in its aliveness. A live cell has everything to sustain life. If you consume a live cell, you will see the sense of health in your system will be very different from anything that you have known. When we cook the foods, it destroys the life in it. Eating foods after its process of destruction does not give the same amount of life energy to the system. But when you eat live foods, it brings a different level of aliveness in you. If one eats lots of sprouts, fruit, and whatever vegetables that can be eaten in a live condition, if you bring in at least thirty to forty percent live food – things that are alive – you will see, it will sustain the life within you also very well.

Above all, the food that you eat is life. It is other forms of life that we are eating – the other forms of lives are giving up their life to sustain our life. If we can eat with enormous gratitude for all the living things which give up their life to sustain our lives, then the food will behave in a very different way within you.

I have noticed how I feel full after eating veggies but without that heavy feeling. Perhaps this one of the wonders that Mother Nature brings to us in mysterious ways.

3 years 7 months ago

It's because, when you kill plants by plucking it, it doesn't cry, but
when you kill animals, it cry, it hurts, it suffer, we can conclude what
human beings who is capable of understanding the divine should eat.

Thank you for replying this quick but I've already read them all and they helped a lot!
I've experimented with foods I've tried to adding eggs in my diet but it's like creating heat and disturbance in my system making my mind less clear so I've tried fortified things like soy milk but I don't know if it was worse or better, and now I'm thinking of getting vitamin pills but if it is negative prana I'm worried of causing serious damage to my system with taking it everyday that's what I wonder.I can't figure out what to eat for this thing.
Also Sadhguru said there are yogis who are on full peanut diet Is it really enough for the body? So do I even need to consume b12?
(Sorry for writing this long.)

Guruji,

Doesn't bodily acids kill all the live organisms even the salad we eat? So I am confused on when you see we should eat live food. Ayurvedic always suggests to eat cooked food. It helps to assimilate well.

5 years 4 months ago

"The idea is to eat as much live food as possible " good rule of thumb...and that should qualify sushi as an acceptable food ?

2 years 11 months ago

It's not about LIVE organisms but more about the live energy of the food. The use of the acid in the stomach is to help prepare the food for the body to uptake the nutrients.

Sometimes by cooking food the chemical composition of the nutrients change. Hence try as raw as possible. Raw = live.

That is what I understood from the article, hope it resonates with you too.

My father is currently battling stage 4 stomach cancer and is very weak.
His appetite is non existent but when he does want to eat he craves salads and fruit.
I see it as, as his life energy is diminishing his body is craving food full of life. That resonates with what Sadhuguru says above.

Its a nice article and explains why live is better than dead or cooked, but i am not seeing explanation or information of why vegetarian food as against non-veg. Any feedback? Thanks.

2 years 10 months ago

Sadhguru had an interesting explanation about when you eat meat, the genetic programming in more advanced living beings is harder to over-ride and assimilate into creating a human body. Simpler life forms are easier to assimilate.

READERS CAN also try to progress from vegs to Vegan foregoing even dairy products, and see for yourself how your gastrointestinal tract becomes quieter and makes you more aware and sensitive

A wonderful article and such refreshing clarity, thank you SADHGURU.

"If one eats lots of sprouts, fruit, and whatever vegetables that can be eaten in a live condition, if you bring in at least thirty to forty percent live food – things that are alive – you will see, it will sustain the life within you also very well"

I have found this to be very true. 4 weeks ago i decided to consume only fruits, vegetables, sprouts and as much fresh food as possible. I eliminated whole grains too.

The first two days i felt a little tired but after that my body must have adapted to it and now i find that i have so much energy and enthusiasm. I feel really good from inside and alive.

Especially after having fresh fruits vegetables and sprouts. I don't feel lethargic or tired. Listen to your body it knows best.

For the first 30 years of my life I eat nonveg sparingly (once a week.) For the next decade or so I eat nonveg at least 3 to 4 times a week.

It's been a year that I have totally given up eating nonveg. I feel fantastic. Mentally and spiritually I feel at peace as no animals are being tortured for my consumption and my stomach is no longer the graveyard of animals. Physically too I feel great.

The decision to stop eating nonveg was mine. I had not seen or read anything. My soul was unhappy at I being responsible for taking many lives.

My faith in being vegetarian has been strengthened by such articles. Thank you.

i have been a vegan for few years now with Indian food its easier as we have much DAAL and veges. Also people forget that animals have a soul too. and when we eat animals we are eating their vibration of pain. Milk and yogurt causes many diseases and also mucuos in the arteries and lungs

If your talking about sushi fish, then no. That's a dead animal, the animal isn't alive, they just didn't cook the dead flesh of the fish. And the article is talking about vegetarian food that is alive.

Namaste,
As a vegan I'm going for supplements for b12 but if I'm not wrong Sadhguru said that they are negative prana also It doesn't work on that way and we should be eating whole foods and I can see why as my body reacts so I'm concerned. If anyone can show a way, It would be so helpful.
Thanks
