Sadhguru looks at why organic clothing can make a huge difference for a person, and explains that the benefits of organic cotton are multifaceted, having a deep impact on the body, mind and energy.

Sadhguru: Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about wearing clothing made from organically produced cotton. But human beings have always been doing that. Everything was organic. Even now, in a country like India, it largely is. Organic clothing or organic farming is not some special idea. That is the way it has always been done. It is only in the last few decades that we have given that up because someone changed it for commercial interests. I am not trying to prescribe what someone should wear, but you should look at your life with a certain freedom, without compulsions, and decide.

Why Organic Clothing?

The kind of clothes you wear can impact your physical and mental health and wellbeing. So it is important to look at what the weather is like today and what kind of clothing would be best for your health and wellbeing. But most people are not thinking of their wellbeing. You will see, for example, in a country like India, many people walk around in forty-degrees-centigrade weather wearing black jackets and ties! What you eat, what you wear and how you live are about your wellbeing. Unfortunately, so many people just wear whatever is being put on them without looking at what they should wear and why.

The kind of clothes you wear can impact your physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Why organic clothing matters is because there is a huge difference in the way your body functions when you wear synthetic clothing and when you wear organic clothing. You needn’t believe anything that anyone says. Try it out and see how it feels. Wear raw silk or cotton – even your inner garments – for a week and see how your body feels. Then wear something tight and synthetic and check. You will see a big difference in the level of comfort and ease at which your body functions because there is a certain aspect to what wraps the body.

The Benefits of Organic Cotton and Silk

Another thing is, how you can exude who you are is also enhanced or restricted by certain substances. Cotton and silk are best for your system. Particularly raw silk or cotton that is not treated in any way has a certain kind of impact. It is not that if you wear synthetic clothing you will fall dead. You can still meditate and be the same person even if you wear synthetic from top to bottom – but with a little struggle and effort.

You can still meditate and be the same person even if you wear synthetic from top to bottom – but with a little struggle and effort.

Seeing the benefits of organic cotton and taking care of the quality of your clothing may not be very practical for lots of people today because they own enough clothes for ten lifetimes. When you want to have two hundred dresses, you end up buying off the shelf. But if you bring this down to a simpler format, if you don’t mind having eight pairs of clothing and managing life within that, you can choose quality over quantity.

It is time more people choose quality over quantity in every sense. Only then can we save this planet. The problem right now is that people have gone for quantity and there is not enough quantity on this planet. But there is quality. If you choose quality over quantity, we can become finer and finer and there is room for all of us.

"Only then can we save this planet." Are you kidding me.. Save the Planet is one arrogant attempt by mankind to control Mother Nature..Leave Nature ALONE :)

I'm sure all the people in third world countries suffering from crop failure due to heatwaves and shifting rainfall patterns, and all those people in small islands that will be submerged entirely in a few years, not to mention people in coastal areas suffering from intensified cyclones agree totally and unequivocally with you.

Dear v2, I see many angles of interpreting an isolated statement. But I don't see anything arrogant in this post. Here I think is just about encouraging people to live more sensibly "quality over quantity in every sense", which in fact, will indirectly benefit the whole Planet, or "leave nature alone" in the sense that we won't irresponsibly continue to exploit it, but rather treat it sensibly in every way, including the clothes that we wear. But esentially is about us, the saving of the Planet will naturally come as a result of that. And I think here is talked about saving the Planet in the sense that, the way our generation is treating Mother Earth today, in this rhythm, in a matter of a few decades there may be almost no Planet left. So, there is a very significant reason for all of us to become more sensible with everything around us, and especially within us. I hope you understand my point of view. Love and respect.

perspective is all that matters at the end of the day..we are not evolving in the planet, we are evolving with the planet...

The single isolated line, should not be interpreted to mean something other than what it is intended to. Sadhguru himself says, 'Saving the planet is an arrogant statement by humanity. If all the human beings on this planet disappear, the planet will flourish within a few centuries. We are more concerned about saving ourselves and continue living on this planet.' And I am sure that Sadhguru means, saving ourselves by preserving human sustaining forces on this planet, in this context. My apologies for insufficient linguistics, my pranaam to Sadhguru, and my love to all life.
