Chuda Karma

Rituals for Children

Salem, Gobichettipalayam

The tradition of a child’s first tonsure is conducted at Linga Bhairavi.

  • It helps children to establish freedom from the comfort of the womb and prepares them for participation in the world. It also stimulates growth of the brain and nervous system.

  • Adults and children of any age may also offer their hair to Devi symbolizing freedom from the past (Kesha Arpanam).

Ritual Details

  • Chuda Karma is available for children up to 12 years of age.

All children’s rituals include:

  • Depending on the child’s age, either application of energized Teerthakund water on the child or them taking a dip in the Teerthakund.

  • Adorning the child with a blessed garland and tilak.

  • An aura cleansing process to remove negativities.

  • Vibrant chants to invoke Devi’s grace.

  • An offering of samarpanam and arati for the wellbeing of the child and family.

  • Tying of a consecrated Devi Abhaya Sutra to the child’s wrist for their growth and stability.
