Indian Classical Dance Form
Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance forms that originated in southern India. Initially practiced as an offering in temples, Bharatanatyam today has adapted and evolved to be one of the most prevalent performing arts.
Interlaced with melody and rhythm this artform is a unique way of expressing oneself through movement. Practicing Bharatanatyam brings a sense of awareness of one's body, mind and emotions, helping improve your balance and stability.

Im really obese, I want to become slim and flexible. Is it possible to lose weight with this dance practice?
With any physical activity, the level of fitness and agility will increase naturally. So in that sense you can say that this dance might be of support, though it is not specifically aimed for this purpose.
I live in a small apartment, and I am unable to do the dance moves properly. Is there some modification?
There is no modification. We recommend finding a more conducive space for practice.
I am very clumsy and I don't remember the sides correctly. I fell down once already. Will this get better with practice?
For most people, it gets better with practice. As you repeat the steps, you will feel more comfortable and familiar over time.
How important is it to expression emotions through the face? I notice that all dancers do this, but I cannot.
Yes, expressing through your face is one of the important factors in Bharatanatyam. You can keep in mind the meaning and emotion of the composition and express it in the best way you can.
Why is the traditional dance and music so slow? Can you teach us something more upbeat?
It is not that these art forms are always slow; they too have fast-paced movements and compositions. Since this might be the first time many of you are getting introduced to Bharatanatyam, the program is starting with something slow.
Do I need privacy while doing it? Is it ok if someone else is in the room?
It is perfectly fine if there are other people in the room as long as you are comfortable with it.
Are there any specific requirements like food timings or any other dietary restrictions?
There are no specific dietary restrictions and the food timing is according to every individual’s comfort.
Is there any restriction on practicing Bharatanatyam during pregnancy or menstrual cycles?
No. Once again, you can take the call. If you are having pain or discomfort, it is recommended you rest.
I have a severe back pain after doing this. Is it normal?
Since you have just begun dancing, it might be natural for you to have pain but if you have had an injury or the pain is acute, it is best you consult a doctor.
I have a poor memory, I can not remember these names. Will we get a written pamphlet?
You need not worry about remembering the names. As you keep repeating the names, you will remember them.
Are there any tips to become more flexible?
The warm-up exercises and even the adavu practices that will be taught during the program will be of great support to help your flexibility.
