17 million saplings planted (70% survival rate) 2 million volunteers 852,587 saplings planted in 3 days, a Guinness World Record Awarded Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar – India’s highest environmental award

Project GreenHands (PGH) is a grassroots ecological initiative established by Isha Foundation, which aims to take corrective measures to increase the green cover, restore soil health and manage natural resources appropriately. Towards this end, PGH has thus far successfully overseen the planting of more than 17 million saplings by over 2 million volunteers. In 2006, 852,587 saplings were planted in just 3 days by over 250,000 volunteers, earning the project a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Indian Government has recognized PGH’s positive ecological impact and awarded it the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar – India’s highest environmental award.

PGH is involved in an array of rural and urban greening campaigns across Tamil Nadu, and has over the years partnered with the Government, corporates, schools, colleges and NGOs in various environmental initiatives. PGH wants Tamil Nadu to be a beacon of environmental responsibility, illustrating what is possible when people take their future into their own hands and take action now, to save their environment.
