Mahashivratri Sadhana Instructions & Guidelines
Sadhguru has offered the Mahashivratri sadhana, which allows one to become more receptive to the possibilities of Mahashivratri. Anyone over the age of 8 can participate. Here are the instructions.

The Mahashivratri sadhana is a preparation for Mahashivratri – a night of tremendous possibilities. Anyone over the age of eight can participate in the sadhana, which can be done for a duration of either 40, 21, 14, 7 or 3 consecutive days leading up to Mahashivratri on February 24, 2017. The 40-day sadhana starts from Jan 16, 21-day from Feb 4, 14-day from Feb 11, 7-day from Feb 18, and 3-day from Feb 22.

Daily Sadhana Process

The daily process for the sadhana is as follows:

List

  • Do 12 cycles of Shiva Namaskar on empty stomach. Then chant the Sarvebhyo Chant thrice. This should be done once a day, before sunrise or after sunset.

Sarvebhyo Chant

Aum Sarvebhyo Devebhyo Namaha
(We bow down to all the celestial and divine beings)
Aum Pancha Bhutaya Namaha
(We bow down to the five elements)
Aum Shri Sathguruve Namaha
(We bow down to the Eternal Guru)
Aum Shri Pritviyai Namaha
(We bow down to Mother Earth)
Aum Adi Yogeshwaraya Namaha
(We bow down to the One who is the Origin of Yoga)
Aum, Aum, Aum

List

    • Soak 8-10 peppercorns together with 2-3 vilva or neem leaves in honey, and a handful of groundnuts in water, overnight. After the Shiva Namaskar and chanting, chew the leaves, consume the peppercorns after mixing them with lemon juice, and eat the groundnuts as well. If neem or vilva leaves are not available, please take neem powder balls. Neem powder is available at IshaShoppe.com. Please be sure to finish your regular sadhana such as Shambhavi Mahamudra before consuming these.
    • A few points regarding the Shiva Namaskar practice:
      • Pregnant ladies are advised not to do Shiva Namaskar.
      • Ladies can do Shiva Namaskar during their menstrual periods.
      • People with hernia are advised to do the variations of Shiva Namaskar by using a cushion or a chair.
    • Light an oil lamp once in the morning and once in the evening. If a lamp is not available, you can use a candle.
    • Chant the Yoga Yoga Yogeshwaraya chant twelve times in the morning and twelve times in the evening after lighting the lamp. It is best to do this sadhana during the 40-minute sandhya kalas. Two significant sandhya kalas begin 20 minutes before and end 20 minutes after sunrise and sunset.

Yoga Yoga Yogeshwaraya

Yoga Yoga Yogeshwaraya
Bhuta Bhuta Bhuteshwaraya
Kala Kala Kaleshwaraya
Shiva Shiva Sarveshwaraya
Shambho Shambho Mahadevaya

Sadhana Guidelines

There are a few guidelines to follow during the sadhana period.

List

      • Have only 2 meals a day. The first meal should be after 12:00 noon.
      • If you feel hungry, you can drink the peppercorn-honey-lemon juice and water mixture again.
      • Avoid smoking, consuming alcohol and eating non-vegetarian food.
      • A black cloth should be worn, tied on the upper right arm for men and the upper left arm for women. Any black cloth can be used, but the cloth should be 12 inches in length and 1 inch wide. Those participating in the sadhana can procure the black cloth by themselves.
      • Wear only white or light-colored clothing.
      • Please have a bath or shower twice a day using herbal bathing powder.
      • Apply Vibhuti on the following points: Agna – between the eyebrows, Vishuddhi – pit of the throat, Anahata – just beneath where the rib cage meets, and Manipuraka – just below the navel.

Culmination of Sadhana

It is best to culminate the sadhana at Isha Yoga Center on Mahashivaratri.

The process is as follows:

List

  • It is essential to remain in Jagarana, which means to stay awake the whole night.
  • Chant the Yoga Yoga Yogeshwaraya chant 112 times.
  • Offer something to 3 people in need of food or money.
  • Offer a vilva leaf / neem leaf / leaf with 3 or 5 petals to Dhyanalinga.
  • Remove the black cloth from your arm and tie it near Nandi in front of Dhyanalinga. The process of tying the cloth in front of Dhyanalinga offers the possibility to dissolve karmic impressions, even after one has left the space.
  • Complete a circumambulation of the parikrama of 112-foot Adiyogi.

If for some reason you are unable to culminate at the Isha Yoga Center, you can culminate the sadhana at home on Mahashivaratri. In that case,

List

  • It is essential to remain in jagarana.
  • Chant the Yoga Yoga Yogeshwaraya chant 112 times.
  • Offer something to 3 people in need of food or money.
  • Offer a vilva leaf / neem leaf / leaf with 3 or 5 petals to a photo of Dhyanalinga. You can download a photo at isha.sadhguru.org/MSRsadhana.
  • Remove the black cloth from your arm, burn the cloth and smear the ashes on your forearms and legs after completing the culmination process described above.

If you have any questions, contact: mahashivarathri@ishafoundation.org

2 years 5 months ago

I'm so grateful for this Sadhana. I can sense how powerful it's going to be. I have to prepare for this, but look forward to starting the 21 day version. It was around this time last year that I found Sadhguru and then stayed up all night during the Mahashivratri webcast. So grateful for what this reflection of divinity has brought into my life. Please do that webcast again Isha!

2 years 5 months ago

whole night until?? What time can we go back to sleep? 6am?

1 year 5 months ago

Its mentioned in the instructions that the groundnuts should be soaked. Please go through the instructions again.

2 years 5 months ago

Namaskaram,
1. If i perform bhuta shuddhi, when should i do bhuta shuddhi? After Mahashivratri sadhana or before Mahashivratri sadhana?

2. How to offer vilva/neem leaf on the last day? Is their any special way to offer? Or just keep it in a plate and keep it in front of dhyanalinga photo at home?

2 years 5 months ago

namaskar

Could you please clarify if I can do this sadhana as I am not doing any regular shambhavi practice.
I have done the course some years back.

2 years 5 months ago

Yes, all the time, till the culmination on Mahashivarathri

2 years 5 months ago

I followed this for fist few weeks. Lime water juice (with honey and pepper) brought back the respiratory tract infections that I had painstakingly gotten rid of. This gave me weeklong fever too! Just got out of fever yesterday, but throat will take time to heal. I guess, this whole process needs tweaking as per individual circumstances... Especially as per your body type, present or past health concerns, weather conditions, food habits etc. Vegetarians, tetotellers and certain body types have a lower body temperature and can't afford bath twice a day in North India's extreme cold weather that gets worse with pollution/ smog. And anyone with a history of past respiratory tract infections would certainly pay the price... Nevertheless, I humbly request that one-size-fits-all commercialized approaches aren't followed and such practices are advertised more sensibly by following a 360 degree approach to cover at least the sensitive aspects (if not all aspects). Namaskar,
Pt. Lalit Bhardwaj Sharma

If you register for the live web stream, the recording will be available for 24 hours.

Pepper corn and ground nuts separate. About Mahashivarathri night, ideally you should stay awake all night yes...from 6pm to 6am. Otherwise at least till Bramha Muhurtam, approx 3:45am

2 years 5 months ago

Thanks a lot. What about Sakthi chalana kriya? After Mahashivratri sadhana or before Mahashivratri sadhana? Sorry to ask this late.

2 years 5 months ago

Thank you this helps!

2 years 5 months ago

Yes can be done. But make sure shiva namaskaram happens before sunrise if you are doing in the morning.

1 year 6 months ago

Better not consume neem leaves. Check with your doctor first.

1 year 4 months ago

You can fast if you wish.

2 years 5 months ago

It's called snanam powder

2 years 5 months ago

I would really like to do the sadhana for 40 days but the only thing is the herbal powder even if ordered now wont reach me in time. What should I do? Is using soap prohibited? Will a herbal soap do?

2 years 5 months ago

Namaskaram, Can I start it from today onwards???

1 year 5 months ago

Please continue to do your practices and the chanting. You can do the practices in the plane, maybe in the back-kitchen space. Please let the crew know that you're doing sadhana and have to do your practices. Am sure they will accommodate. Best to chant to yourself, not say it loud. Even without a lamp should be fine during your travel.

2 years 6 months ago

Namaskaram Sadhguru, Thanks for the Sadhana..You are really great...Shambho

2 years 5 months ago

thanks a lot ....

2 years 5 months ago

Namaskar,
Could you please answer few additional question regarding the Mahashivaratri Sadhana:
1. Is groundnut and peanut the same? I asked in few Indian stores and they claim it's all the same...
2. Peppercorns- they should be whole or grounded? Also, I understand they could be dissolved in some water before eating them with honey+lemon juice?
3. Shiva Namaskaram to be done only in morning but singing of Yoga Yoga Yogishwarayashould be done 2 times (morning+evening), correct?

4. recommended black cloth length of 12 inches is too short for my upper arm- can it be longer? Any specific length?
5. how much of neem powder to consume with honey?
Thank you so much for your help.

2 years 5 months ago

Peppercorns swallow whole or chew?

2 years 5 months ago

There are reasons why we Indians bath before starting certain practices, especially of this kind. It's not an assumption - it's thousands of years of traditional knowledge that is part of our genetic nature now Mr. Urban Tea. You might be able to explore and understand few of these reasons on Google.

1 year 5 months ago

should i keep the black cloth on my arm at all times ? or can i remove it during shower and sleeping ?

2 years 5 months ago

Do this Sadhana fully as instructed here. If you also want to chant Yogishwaraya you can :)

2 years 5 months ago

No problem..all practices before the mahashivarathti sadhana

2 years 5 months ago

Namaskar, Can I bathe with warm water, as it's quite cold in New Delhi and I might get sinus issues if I take bath with cold one? Also, I'm assuming that Bath or shower has to be taken before doing the Shiva Namaskar? Can I use a black thread I picked up from a Temple once, instead of using a cloth? Would it be better if we also follow complete abstinence for 40 days and sleep on floor? Some of us even stop shaving and cutting nails during these days. Can I also use chandan tilak along with vibhuti?
Thanks.
Pranam,
Lalit

All other hath yoga practices like bhut shuddhi, surya kriya, angamardhana shud be done after Shiv Namaskar and before having the soaked water n peppercorns? Hatha yoga practices have an order in which they are supppsed to be done. What is the advisable order here.
Also, what is the procedure to do the mahashivratri sadhana culmination imat Isha centre..
And about wearing white or light coloured clothes, is that for all throughout the sadhana days or while doing the Shiv Namaskar and chanting.
Is there any homemade substitute of herbal powder. Like besan ot moong daal powder will do?

Or
4 x 3(1 cycle) = 12 times.

1 year 5 months ago

Shiva Namaskar as mentioned in the instructions should be done only once - either before Sunrise or after Sunset.
If you wish, you can do all your other practices after Shiva Namaskar. You can follow the same order you were following.
You should have the peppercorns only after all your practices are done.
Please refer the guidelines for culmination
White or light coloured clothes can be worn throughout all the sadhana days.
For a basic sandman powder, can try this: Mix 250 gm of Green Gram (Besan) powder + 50 gm of Fenugreek (Methi) powder + 25 gm Kasturi Turmeric (or can get turmeric roots and powder)

2 years 6 months ago

Namaskaram,

In the sarvebhyo chant, the text above says.. 'Aum Shri Sathguruve Namaha' where as in sound cloud audio Sadhguru says 'Aum Sathguruve Namaha'.. Do we have to follow the audio or text?

Use any leaf that has 3 or 5 petals.

2 years 5 months ago

Most important thing in the tradition is to be awake and keep the spine erect the whole night. Regarding the fasting if something is offered by sadhguru please go for it

2 years 5 months ago

i have started 40 days sadhana (starts 03.00 am) but i don't apply vibhuti, i don't shower twice a day, i don't wear black cloth all the time (only during the sadhana) and i don't eat anything after shivanamaskar. the rest, i do exactly, word for word. i have no question.

nameste,

I will be attending the Shivaratri celebrations at the local center and not at the Ashram so for culmination of the Sadhana how should i proceed ? at what time the said things should be done like removing, burning the black arm cloth, chanting the mantra 112 times and offering the things to needy people and also the offerings to the Dhaynalinga
They should be done during the day time or should be done in the evening ?

2 years 5 months ago

Namaskaram,
Can vilva powder balls be used instead of Neem powder balls.
Do the balls have to be soaked in honey overnight.

1 year 5 months ago

Its not a contradiction. Most people cannot sustain hunger until l12 noon. So, the groundnuts. You can skip groundnuts, if you want before your noon meal.

1 year 4 months ago

You can continue the Shiva Namaskar.

2 years 5 months ago

Black cloth tied at all times. Burning the cloth after all the other offerings are done... Last part of culmination.

2 years 5 months ago

Namaskaram between Morning meal and evening meal we can't have fruits ?

2 years 5 months ago

1. Instructions are clear, if hungry you can have pepper-honey-lime juice.
2. Shiva namaskaram - sarvebyo chant is one part and consuming honey, pepper, neem, groundnut then chanting yogishwaraya is one part. The second part is a must in the mornings. shiva namaskaram - sarvebyo can happen either in morning or evening.

2 years 5 months ago

why assume? instructions did not say tot ake bath before doing the shiva namaskar.....

1 year 5 months ago

Yes, you can do it as per US times.

2 years 5 months ago

You can still have neem and turmeric before Angamardhana then continue with Mahashivarathri Sadhana...

2 years 5 months ago

Hi Mad Joy, Are you an official representative from Isha?

Here are my questions:

1) It says we are to light a candle in the morning and also in the evening. Are these to be done before doing the shiva namaskar? or is it a seperate thing that is not tied to that and the sunrise/sunset?

2) Do we have to light the candle during the 40 min (20 min before sunrise/sunset or 20 min after sunrise/sunset)

3) one part says that Offer a vilva leaf / neem leaf / leaf with 3 or 5 petals to Dhyanalinga.

**If I cannot get a vilva leaf or neem leaf, then what? Can I get any leaf from any tree?

Instructions say to use neem leaves to soak with the peppercorn, honey, water and groundnuts. But what if I am using neem POWDER? How much powder to put in when I do the soaking of peppercorn?

And insturctions say to "chew the leaves", so what if I have neem powder? Do I make new neem powder (that is NOT from the soak) and just eat that? How to make the balls??

Thanks

Sadhguru has not spoken specifically about this. If you wish, you can.

Anytime you wish, before your sadhana

Namaskaram, I do fasting on Mahashivaratri from morning to evening without taking water...In this scenario, is it ok to have the pepper, honey, groundnuts etc in the morning of Mahashivaratri ?? is it not break the fasting of Mahashivaratri ?? or it is right to have these things ?? I dont know what it right, it is being the tradition, i am following... But i request that whichever is right with respect to Spiritual aspect, please guide accordingly. Thanks.

No, you may not get the benefits of 40 day sadhana and it's important to follow all the aspects correctly, that's why you can see so many queries . Please go for 21 day sadhana.

Then you should not participate in this. =D

Namaskaram,

Thank you very much for the great sadhana.

This is regarding Sarvebhyo chant.

With my little knowledge of Sanskrit, I feel "Sathguruve" must be changed to "Sadhgurave" i.e. two changes. The first is - "th" must be changed to "dh". That is how we all have been addressing Sa DH gu ru all these days and that is correct. We always call him sa DH gu ru, not sa TH gu ru. That is correct Sanskrit too. Sath + guru becomes SADHGURU, i.e. TH becomes DH, as per Sanskrit grammar rules. The second is - "ru" must be changed to "ra". The word GURU becomes GURAVE, not GURUVE. Note "RA" in place of "RU". In Guru Puja lyrics too, we say "GURAVE" at several places, "thasmai sree gurave namaha" and not "guruve namaha". So, I feel "SATHGURUVE" must be replaced by "SADHGURAVE".

Secondly, "Pancha Bhutaya" must be changed to "Pancha Bhuthebhyo". Bhutaya is singular and Bhuthebhyo is plural (five elements). Just like Devebhyo in the first line, we must say Bhuthebhyo in the second line.

This is based on my little knowledge of Sanskrit. If there are other reasons for the given spellings, please let us know. Thanks a lot.

I cut my cloth to 12 inches and found it it is too small. I had to tie the other piece to it to get the appropriate length. So the black cloth I am wearing now has two knots in it. Is this ok?

You need to be awake all through the night on Mahashivratri until 6 am the following day. You can sleep after 6 am the next day, any hour you like.

What is herbal bathing powder? The online isha shop only has herbal bar soap. And liquid shampoo/conditioner. There is no powder...

The black cloth should be exactly 12 inches in length? What if it is not enough to tie around the upper arm, what do we do?

2 years 5 months ago

Namasthe,

This is regarding Culmination of Sadhana.

Should the steps listed above be done AFTER staying awake for the whole night on Mahashivaratri?

AAAFFFTTTEEERRR?

The tendency is to rush home and fall asleep at the earliest when the program ends at 6 am.

There are four things to do. Should they be done in that order? (1) Chanting 112 times, (2) offering to 3 people, (3) offering to Dhyanalinga, (4) untying the black cloth.

Assuming that I will come to attend Sadhguru's program on Mahashivaratri night, will vilva leaves, neem leaves etc. be made available at the Dhyanalinga temple? Or, should I get them along with me when I come to the program? Or, is the leaf in the Linga Jyothi sufficient?

Finding 3 people who will receive food or money may be difficult to find at that time at Isha Yoga Center. So, can this be done later in the day at Coimbatore city? Or, can this be done on Mahashivarathri day itself? Or, should this be done only after the night?

TO WHAT should I tie the black cloth? Tie it near Nandi TO WHAT? Should this be the VERY LAST step? Or, can I do this before offering to Dhyanalinga and 3 people?

In short, kindly confirm the sequence of the four things to do. Which are mandatory? Which must be done immediately after the night-long program? Which can be done later in the day on March 8? Which can be done on March 7 itself (for example, offering food and money to 3 people)?

This is assuming that I will come to attend Sadhguru's program on March 7 night.

What about people who are not coming there? Kindly clarify the above points for them also.

Thanks a lot for your patience.

Suresh
