<h2>A calendar for human life<o:p></o:p></h2>

Sadhguru: How we make our calendar is a very significant part of human civilizations. In their evolution, calendar-making was an important step. <o:p></o:p>
It is estimated that 8,000 to 12,000 years ago, the first Hindu calendar was made. The incredible thing is that it never needed a correction, because this calendar is not a calculation or guesswork &ndash; it is based on observation. Based on these observations of the world around us and the influences that act upon us at different times of the year, we created the first solar calendar.<o:p></o:p>
Then we found that the solar calendar was not addressing the subjectivity of who we are. The influences of the moon are triggering so many chemical, ionic, and electronic reverberations within us &ndash; so many changes and upsurges within us &ndash; that we realized we could not proceed without a lunar calendar.<o:p></o:p>

A lunar calendar was made separately, with 12 to 13 months per year. Then they realized that people wanted to have both of them together, so they made the very complex luni-solar calendar.<o:p></o:p>
The oldest surviving written record of it is approximately 1,500 years old, though the calendar is certainly older than that &ndash; it had already been established for a long time. We know this because references to it appear in epics like the Mahabharat and the Ramayan, where the months and lunar influences are discussed in detail. <o:p></o:p>
<h2>The precision behind the calendar<o:p></o:p></h2>

The people of that time were very conscious of these things. When Galileo had not yet been born, and when the rest of the world still believed the earth was flat, these people had fully calculated the exact distances between the Earth and the Moon, between the Earth and the Sun, and the precise relationship between the rotations of the Moon and those of the planet.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
Most incredibly of all &ndash; something that modern science only arrived at in the 20th century &ndash; they had already understood that there is a precession to the planet&rsquo;s rotation.<o:p></o:p>
Precession works like this: the planet rotates at a certain angle, and as it moves through space, the axis itself slowly traces a circular path, like a spinning top that wobbles. According to ancient Hindu calculations, one complete cycle of this precession takes 25,856 years. Modern calculations place it at around 25,772 years &ndash; a difference of 84 years. That difference exists because the calculations were made at different times, as the cycle itself has shifted over time. <o:p></o:p>

For example, when the Sun moves into the sign of Aries &ndash; called Mesha in Sanskrit &ndash; that event should coincide with the equinox, and it did many years ago. Today, however, it is about 24 days off. This has happened because of the ongoing movement and the changing geometry between the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth as the precession continues.<o:p></o:p>
If the precession increases &ndash; if the wobble of the planet becomes more pronounced &ndash; the consequences are difficult to predict with certainty. Modern astronomers say there is a possibility that the Earth&rsquo;s magnetic North and South Poles could reverse at some point in the future.<o:p></o:p>
The Earth may make its own corrections. But if the wobble were to increase significantly, there could be destabilization in the Earth&rsquo;s systems, and, above all, the human system could get destabilized in many different ways.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>The Sun reaches much deeper than skin-deep<o:p></o:p></h2>

This is why the equinox matters. This transition from winter to spring marks a time when many things change. Our relationship with the Sun changes &ndash; and that does not just mean it gets a little warmer. Because of the way the planet tilts toward the Sun during this period, the electromagnetic protection that shields us from the plasma streaming from the Sun weakens at this time.<o:p></o:p>
We are currently in a period of excessive solar flares, with another two and a half years of elevated activity ahead of us. The impact is definitely present on the planet and on all life.<o:p></o:p>
In certain regions &ndash; particularly between about 23&deg; and 33&deg; latitude &ndash; the Sun&rsquo;s impact is highest. Parts of China, India, and the United States fall within this band where the impact from the Sun during this time can be especially strong. <o:p></o:p>

Electrical systems within the human body can become disrupted because the Sun&rsquo;s influence may cause calcium to enter neurons prematurely. The balance of the neurological system and the body as a whole depends on the equilibrium between potassium, sodium, and calcium. <o:p></o:p>
When calcium enters neurons in excess, it can cause blockages that may lead to strokes and other serious conditions. This does not mean everyone will fall ill &ndash; how much disturbance occurs depends on one&rsquo;s constitution, but some disturbance may happen.<o:p></o:p>
This culture devised ways to address this situation. For instance, the 14 days between the festival of Holi, which is right after the Phalguni Purnima or full moon, and the following Amavasya or new moon, carry the highest solar impact in the Northern Hemisphere.<o:p></o:p>
Indian festivals are based on natural occurrences on that day. They were structured to engage people in specific activities so they would not simply go about their regular routines and be unknowingly affected &ndash; because not every human being is built with the same degree of resilience.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>What the body is already telling you<o:p></o:p></h2>

Every other form of life is sensitive to these shifts and behaves accordingly. Only human beings seem to have their textbooks in their heads and fail to notice what is actually happening within their own systems. This is something everyone should start doing. It only requires a little attention. Simply by closing your eyes, you should be able to feel approximately how close it is to a full moon or a new moon.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
At the very least, women should know when their cycle is approaching &ndash; not by counting days on a calendar, but by feeling their body. The female body is far more sensitive than the male body, but that does not mean men cannot experience this sensitivity. With a little practice, anyone can sense when Purnima or Amavasya is approaching.<o:p></o:p>

You should start observing these things &ndash; not as a calendar exercise, but because it is genuinely important to know. If you are aware that on a given day there will be some natural disturbance in your system, you can be a little more cautious and conscious. This need not produce fear. Fear is an irrational reaction to situations we do not know. What is needed instead is a conscious response &ndash; just taking a little extra care on those days.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
A simple and effective way to minimize external influences is to keep your head wet. When the hair is wet, it significantly reduces the electromagnetic impact on the system. In this tradition, certain times of the day, referred to as sandhyas, are particularly important &ndash; morning, afternoon, evening, and, for a few people, also midnight. This is why we say that when you are doing serious sadhana, you should shower a minimum of two to three times a day and keep your hair, or at least the top of your head, wet.<o:p></o:p>
Keeping your hair wet is also beneficial on Amavasya and Purnima. But the period from the spring equinox to the summer solstice is particularly important because this is when the Sun&rsquo;s influence is at its peak. The period from the September equinox to the December solstice is a different phase altogether.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Can we reduce the impact of solar flares?<o:p></o:p></h2>

Individuals can do things to reduce the impact of solar flares, but not collectively for the planet. The Earth has its own intelligence. Nature gives you exactly what you need. When the solar plasma impact is high, certain fruits and vegetables come into season, particularly in tropical regions. These are the foods you are supposed to eat.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
But now people import fruits and vegetables from distant places and eat those instead. The earth has immense intelligence, much more than you. That intelligence is not being made use of, so people have to go through all these upheavals. Eating locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables is one fundamental thing you can do. What you ingest is as important as how you breathe.<o:p></o:p>
In southern India, there are also traditional homemade preparations, such as Lakshmi charu in Andhra Pradesh and koozh in Tamil Nadu, which you are supposed to consume during this season. If you eat bread and eggs for breakfast instead, you do not make use of this knowledge.<o:p></o:p>

After the spring equinox, some people &ndash; particularly women &ndash; may feel a kind of lethargy and a lack of energy. If you do not reverse this with the right kind of food and activity, if you are not conscious that you are being slowed down from inside and need to raise yourself a little, you tend to fall into that dip in energy. <o:p></o:p>
Everything in nature is in full spurt right now because of the Sun, which is the primary energy source. All plant life is fully active, and consequently all the smaller life forms are as well. If you dig into the earth in a tropical land right now, you will see it is bursting with life.
The Sun empowers all of this. But power has no intent. Excess energy can be used in so many ways &ndash; positively or negatively &ndash; and that is a matter of choice. Electricity can light up a room, make a microphone work, and, if you put your hand in the wrong place, it can kill you. Electricity is neither good nor evil &ndash; it simply has power and no intent. <o:p></o:p>
Everything in nature is the same. It simply has power. We must have the necessary intelligence to use it the right way.<o:p></o:p>

Long before anyone divided time into neat boxes on a wall, human beings looked up &ndash; and just as closely, inward and around &ndash; tracking the Sun and the Moon, and the subtle shifts in nature and in their bodies. That attentiveness wasn&rsquo;t superstition. It was a precise science, built over thousands of years of observation.
In this exploration, Sadhguru traces the origins of the Hindu luni-solar calendar and makes the case that its creators understood the natural world and the human system in ways that could greatly enhance our lives &ndash; perhaps more than ever.

<h2>The blessing no one expects</h2>

Most blessings sound like wishes for success, more abundance, better health, bigger wins.<o:p></o:p>
Sadhguru&rsquo;s blessing goes against everything we&rsquo;re taught to want. &ldquo;I know I will die a failure. But I am a blissful failure. This is my blessing to everyone: You must be a blissful failure.
&ldquo;You set up petty goals for yourself and say, &lsquo;I did it, I did it!&rsquo; What&rsquo;s that? For human potential &hellip; you must aim for something that cannot be done in this lifetime. If you take a few steps, the next generation will take the next step. So my blessing is, may you be a blissful failure. If you&rsquo;re blissful, who the hell cares?&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
Alia echoed it back without missing a beat. &ldquo;May we all be blissful failures.&rdquo; Sadhguru expanded on it. &ldquo;Let&rsquo;s be blissful failures &hellip; because human capacity to imagine, human capacity to aspire, is such that it cannot be fulfilled if you live here for five hundred years or a thousand years, unless you have a pea for a brain.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal">The drama you mistake for life</h2>

There is a story Sadhguru tells that stops you cold.<o:p></o:p>
A young TV anchor in Hyderabad, successful by every measure the world uses. One day she jumped from the fifth floor of her apartment and left a note. It read: &ldquo;My brain is my enemy.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
&ldquo;Can you beat this?&rdquo; Sadhguru asked.<o:p></o:p>
Alia&rsquo;s version was ordinary by comparison. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m thinking, &lsquo;Okay, there&rsquo;s a flight to catch. Oh, now we have to leave. What am I doing tomorrow? I have to wake up at this time.&rsquo; This is my brain&hellip;all the time.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
She had already put the larger question on the table. &ldquo;Do you feel like we&rsquo;re all just running in a direction, and actually while we&rsquo;re running, we&rsquo;re not breathing&hellip;we&rsquo;re not living? Do you feel like the pace is outrunning us?&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
Sadhguru&rsquo;s answer was unsparing. &ldquo;You think what nonsense that&rsquo;s happening in your head is life. It&rsquo;s not life &ndash; it&rsquo;s your drama. You don&rsquo;t know how to run your drama; then how will you know how to run your life?&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
When Alia pushed back &ndash; this is just how my brain is &ndash; he didn&rsquo;t let it pass. &ldquo;No, that is not your brain &ndash; that&rsquo;s the way you&rsquo;re conducting your brain. You&rsquo;re a bad driver. You go, take your car, bump into everyone, and then you say, &lsquo;This is what my car does.&rsquo; You&rsquo;re a bad driver, it&rsquo;s as simple as that.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
<h2>The worried mother<o:p></o:p></h2>

Later, Alia brought up her daughter &ndash; three and a half years old, the joy of her life. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m so worried at all times,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Am I being a good enough mother? Am I saying the right things?&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
Sadhguru didn&rsquo;t soften it. &ldquo;A worried parent is not a good parent.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
He pressed further, asking who between Alia and her daughter was more joyful. &ldquo;She,&rdquo; Alia said. And who should be a consultant for life? &ldquo;She,&rdquo; Alia said. Sadhguru&rsquo;s response was immediate: &ldquo;Then what&rsquo;s there for you to teach?&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
&ldquo;You must listen. You must watch. You must see how a child is,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;because a child is far closer to life than you are. &hellip; You must learn how to be life &ndash; because she&rsquo;s just life. Today someone has to make you happy.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>

The &ldquo;bad driver,&rdquo; the worried mother, the mind that won&rsquo;t quiet down &ndash; all of it traces back to the same issue: a mind you haven&rsquo;t taken charge of. &ldquo;May you be a blissful failure,&rdquo; Sadhguru said. &ldquo;If you&rsquo;re blissful, who the hell cares?&rdquo; &ndash; about success, about failure, about any of it.

Alia Bhatt Asked Sadhguru about the Pace of Our Lives – His Answer Went Somewhere Unexpected

When Alia Bhatt sat down with Sadhguru, she accidentally described many of us.<o:p></o:p>

Question: Sadhguru, what&rsquo;s your take on the current wars and the worsening geopolitical situation?<o:p></o:p>
Sadhguru: Idiots can fight even without the influence of the sun. But solar activity does play a role. We still have another two and a half years of excessive solar flares ahead of us. The impact is very much present on the planet and on all life. We thought everyone might become meditative, which is also a possibility. <o:p></o:p>
Excessive energy can be used in so many ways &ndash; whether positively or negatively is a matter of choice. Unfortunately, human beings have a consistent record of doing negative things with the extra energy they have. If they have a lot of energy, they concentrate it and throw bombs at each other. At least here (during Holi), you are throwing colors, which is a good thing.<o:p></o:p>
We need to see how things develop in the next few months. There could be not just a fuel crisis, which is already looming large &ndash; oil is selling at over US$107&ndash;108 per barrel, and Iran is saying it must go to US$200. If it reaches US$200 &ndash; or even US$150 &ndash; every economy on the planet, particularly developing countries, will be seriously affected.<o:p></o:p>
Fuel is one concern, but equally important is the fact that over 30 percent of the world&rsquo;s fertilizers come from the same region. If these supplies are disrupted, crop yields will suffer. In India, people are getting ready to sow during the monsoon season, but that sowing may not yield much because there may not be enough fertilizer available. Russia produces certain types of fertilizers, but the delivery distance is considerable, and there are many restrictions. <o:p></o:p>
<blockquote>
The question is not who is right and who is wrong &ndash; war is wrong.<o:p></o:p>
</blockquote>
If this war does not resolve itself within two to three weeks, a food crisis will begin. As usual, the first people to suffer will be in Africa, then in Asia. Some will fortify themselves &ndash; if necessary, they will steal everyone else&rsquo;s food and eat well. But there could be a major humanitarian crisis on the planet simply because of what is happening.<o:p></o:p>
The question is not who is right and who is wrong &ndash; war is wrong. We must learn to resolve our issues differently. But we cannot seem to do this because there is business involved. Arms and armaments are one of the largest businesses on the planet; they have to be used.&nbsp;
<o:p></o:p>And then there is God involved &ndash; when people fight for God, there is no backing away; they fight to the end. Money and God are tremendous forces on the planet. With both involved, solutions become incredibly difficult.<o:p></o:p>

Too Much Energy, Too Little Wisdom

At a time of ongoing wars in the Middle East and a rising energy crisis, a deeper question emerges: how do human beings use their energy in a world on edge?

Question: I&rsquo;m concerned that certain people direct negative energy toward me and might cause real harm. How can I protect myself?<o:p></o:p>
<h2>What you are up against</h2>
Sadhguru: The more mentally and emotionally distracted and unfocused you are, the more susceptible you are to these forces. If you are in a state of focus and determination, negative influences may be like a small bump in the road &ndash; there will be no crash. But if your emotions and mind are destabilized, even a small influence could lead to a crash.<o:p></o:p>
There are people who manipulate energies, using them for their own wellbeing or to cause harm to others &ndash; even death. In certain parts of India, this is very prevalent. <o:p></o:p>
<blockquote>
If you are in a state of focus and determination, negative influences may be like a small bump in the road &ndash; there will be no crash.<o:p></o:p>
</blockquote>
These practices need not even be directed at you personally. If someone is doing something negative to you and you are not receptive to it, someone sitting nearby may receive it instead. It is like someone shooting at another person on the street &ndash; you are simply walking by, and you may get hit.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>How you can protect yourself<o:p></o:p></h2>

<h3>The color of your clothes<o:p></o:p></h3>

White reflects &ndash; not just in terms of color, but in terms of quality. It assists the quality of not wanting to take things from everybody around you, walking through this world without anything sticking to you. This is particularly important for those on a spiritual path.<o:p></o:p>
Black, by contrast, absorbs &ndash; both the good and the bad. Over time, wearing black will have a serious impact on your psychological, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing &ndash; and on your health as well, because you are simply absorbing everything whether you need it or not.<o:p></o:p>
This becomes especially critical around death. Always wear white when there is death around you, because you do not want to absorb that kind of energy. Those who are alive should stay alive &ndash; they should not become half-dead imbibing that kind of energy.


<h3>Rudraksh</h3>

Rudraksh is a seed from a tree that grows mainly at altitudes between 1,600 and 6,500 feet in the Himalayan region. It has unique vibrations. When you wear rudraksh, it creates a cocoon of your own energy around you so that outside energies do not disturb you.<o:p></o:p>
For people in family and social situations, the five-faced rudraksh is always the best choice. It is best that it be given to you by someone who understands what it is, rather than simply bought off a shelf. Someone once said, &ldquo;Man is ill only because he does not know how to be still.&rdquo; This is perfectly correct. So many illnesses &ndash; especially those that affect the mind and those that arise through outside influences &ndash; are possible only because there is no stillness. Through meditation, you are bringing that stillness into your life. If you are still, you will not be ill.

When Something Feels Off: Protecting Yourself from Negative Energies

Some experiences are hard to explain &ndash; a streak of misfortune, a persistent unease, the sense that something or someone is working against you. Energy is a real force, and there are people who manipulate it to the detriment of others. Whether you are the intended target or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, the effects can be very real. But there are ways to protect yourself.

Questioner: Can a disciple have two masters? If I have been initiated by two spiritual masters, is it better to stick to one and one set of practices &ndash; or do both? And if I follow one, does it mean I am being disrespectful to the other?<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Integrity is not the same as loyalty<o:p></o:p></h2>

Sadhguru: Being with a Guru or a spiritual master is not a question of loyalty but a question of integrity. What is the difference between loyalty and integrity? Loyalty comes from certain emotions that you have. Integrity means that you are dedicated to the purpose for which you are in any given place. Whatever that purpose is, you are absolutely dedicated to it and will not pursue something else instead.<o:p></o:p>
This is happening to a lot of you &ndash; you came here to do spiritual sadhana, but then something happens. You fall in love, get married, develop a headache, a backache, a worm in your head, or your heart starts pulsating strangely. So many things will happen. Life finds a way to pull you off course.<o:p></o:p>
You do not always understand that deviating from the purpose for which you are somewhere is simply a lack of integrity. That does not mean you should never do any of those other things.&nbsp;

You must make a conscious decision &ndash; that is why you have come, maybe to build a life around a spiritual center. That is fine with me. I am not expecting everyone to be totally on fire. But if you came here with fire and then compromised, that is a matter of &ldquo;adjusted&rdquo; integrity. Loyalty is a different thing entirely &ndash; that is not what is needed here.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Wherever you are, be there completely<o:p></o:p></h2>
Whoever you are &ndash; if you were here and have since gone somewhere else and are struggling &ndash; simply let go of this and give yourself completely to wherever you are now. The very fact that you have gone somewhere else means that, for whatever reason, things did not work here. Since you have gone elsewhere, at least do well there. As long as you grow, what is my problem?<o:p></o:p>
Similarly, if you were somewhere else and are now here and struggling, let go of what you carried from elsewhere and do what is required here. It is like coconut groves and mango gardens: you do not take a coconut tree from the lowlands and plant it on top of a mountain. It will not last a month. That is not where it thrives. Nor would you take a mango tree and plant it in a desert. It simply will not work.<o:p></o:p>

The very fact that you moved from one place to another &ndash; whether by your own choice, some other compulsion, or because that master has passed away &ndash; means that once you find yourself somewhere new, give yourself absolutely to that place and that practice. You cannot stand in one place and dig in another. It does not work that way.<o:p></o:p>
Does that mean you are being disrespectful to the one you left? No.<o:p></o:p>
To use an analogy: you had a mother who took care of you well and whom you loved deeply. Let us say for some reason, she passed away, and now your aunt is taking care of you. You can still love and cherish your mother, but you must eat your aunt&rsquo;s food. You cannot sit there waiting for your mother to serve you again, because she will not and she cannot. Otherwise, you will not be nourished. It is as simple as that.<o:p></o:p>
If you have gone from here to somewhere else, it is very easy to love me from a distance. You can sit there, hold love and regard for me, and settle your conscience. I want it to settle quickly, because this is a very brief life. Handling all this rubbish, when will you get there? I have no issue whether you love me or not. But settle it somehow and move forward.<o:p></o:p>
The same applies if you have come here from elsewhere. You can hold as much love and respect for anyone you wish. In fact, I would say hold that for just about everyone in the world.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Selective devotion is deception<o:p></o:p></h2>

I have seen people walking down the road with such arrogance, and then the moment they see me, they dissolve into utter devotion. This is not going to work for you. If you bow down to one person and discount everyone else, no spiritual path will work for you.<o:p></o:p>
In some way, you must see the same quality in everyone &ndash; man, woman, child, donkey, cow, dog, tree, rock. If you have truly sat with a master and something has genuinely happened within you, then you must see that quality in everything. You must treat everything like Sadhguru. Then there is no problem.<o:p></o:p>

When it comes to practices specifically, you must nourish yourself from what is in front of you now.<o:p></o:p>
Do not create such conflicts, because this is a brief life. If you spend it entangled in emotional complications, where will you go?<o:p></o:p>
The fact that you moved somewhere else means something did not work for you here. When you were here, you were thinking about how to escape. Now that you are somewhere else, you wonder whether you should have stayed. Do not do that. Once you leave a place, wherever you go, make it work there.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Never stop. That is the only rule.<o:p></o:p></h2>
Just do not give up your striving &ndash; that is all that matters. When you give up your striving, I am deeply disappointed. If you go away and your striving is intense, that is fine by me. But if you give up your striving, then this is a wasted life for you and a wasted effort for me. Do not do that.<o:p></o:p>
A boy came home from school and said, &ldquo;Dad, do you remember you told me that if I passed my math test, you would give me fifty dollars?&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
The father looked up from his magazine and said, &ldquo;Yes, I remember, son.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
The boy replied, &ldquo;Well, Father, I have saved you the expense.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>
Life has already been invested. I have already invested my life into you in some way &ndash; do not try to save what has already been spent. If I had wanted to save it, I would have saved it myself.<o:p></o:p>

Can a Disciple Have Two Masters?

You have been initiated by two masters. Now which one do you follow? And does staying with one mean you betray the other?
Sadhguru reframes the question entirely. This is not about loyalty &ndash; it is about integrity. And integrity demands that wherever you are, you are there completely.

Question: Namaskaram Sadhguru. In India, some people get their daughters married to trees. Some people also worship certain trees and get deeply involved with them. Is it mere superstition?<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Post-consecration life support<o:p></o:p></h2>

Sadhguru: There are actually ways to tie yourself to a tree. After the Dhyanalinga consecration, I did not have the necessary energy body to survive. The physical body was there, but it would have collapsed within a certain period of time because the necessary energy structure was shattered. <o:p></o:p>
I could not speak. I had lost control over my tongue because the alignment between the energy system and the physical body was lost &ndash; which, over time, would have resulted in death.<o:p></o:p>
Losing control over my tongue was a clear sign that I would not make it. There were so many other signs as well. Those around me started panicking. Then certain things happened, and we decided to see if we could put things back together. We looked at it more as a challenge than a possibility, thinking what is there to lose. <o:p></o:p>
I began to write everything down in a little book because I could not speak. I said, &ldquo;If you are willing to do the following things, we could take the challenge and see.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p>

That was not easy for the people around me &ndash; physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically. But a few were so fiercely committed that they were willing to do just about anything needed. So we set up a complex process and started working. <o:p></o:p>

To stabilize the system, we put it on a little bit of life support &ndash; otherwise it would not have lasted that month. Various things were done, and I am still on a little bit of life support even now<a style="mso-footnote-id: ftn1;" href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title=""><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Aptos; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">[1]</a> &ndash; almost 95 percent on my own, but I have never been able to complete that small remaining bit of work. It requires a complete withdrawal from all other activities, which I have not been able to do for so many years. <o:p></o:p>
You cannot blame it entirely on work; maybe I am a little disinclined because it requires a lot of restructuring of myself. I thought I could do it around the Linga Bhairavi consecration, but it happened on such a tight deadline &ndash; even during the consecration, I was still managing construction, arrangements, and many other things &ndash; so it did not happen. I do not know when such an opportunity will come again.<o:p></o:p>

<h2>Tying life energies to trees and deities<o:p></o:p></h2>
One of the things we did was tie my nadis to a tree, as well as a few other people for support &ndash; and the tree stood firm, which made a big difference. It is a very rare thing for anyone to do.<o:p></o:p>
This tradition of marrying a woman to a tree does have a certain dimension to it, but today it is mostly performed as a superstitious ritual &ndash; only a handful are left who could do it properly. This process of tying one&rsquo;s life energies to other forms of life was done with a certain understanding of life forces.<o:p></o:p>
Some kings had this done before going to war &ndash; they would tie their energies to a tree before leaving. In some cases, people would sit watching the tree, and if the king was going to die, subtle changes would appear beforehand as indication. <o:p></o:p>
This was not an unlikely outcome, because kings in those days went to war for months or even years depending on the campaign, and a king might not necessarily die of injuries in battle &ndash; he could die simply of disease or accident or any number of things, because he was gone for such a long time. <o:p></o:p>
Do not think kings always had a great time. Without demonstrating valor on the battlefield, no one would respect them. They employed all kinds of measures because their lives were constantly in peril.<o:p></o:p>
This process has also been done in the following way &ndash; people would have their energies tied to a personal deity, a consecrated form that was kept in a private shrine and maintained with a certain care.<o:p></o:p>

<h2>Why sacred bonds cannot be taken lightly<o:p></o:p></h2>
There are various dimensions to all of this. Today, if you can manage to tie two people together in marriage, that is quite a feat in itself, because even in India, particularly in urban areas, marriages are beginning to come with a probable expiry date. <o:p></o:p>
When people are already thinking, &ldquo;If it works, I am going to stay,&rdquo; they should not have their energies tied together &ndash; that would become real torture. Only when people are fully determined that they will remain together no matter what, should such a thing be done.<o:p></o:p>
