Here’s Sounds of Isha’s latest release, an abridged rendition of one of Kabir’s popular songs, “Sunta Hai”. Kabir was a 15th century mystic poet, who was born in Kashi. Weaving profound insights in a very simple fashion, his poems and songs make a direct connection with even the mundane chores of our daily lives. In this song, Kabir urges the seeker to see beyond duality and illusion, and experience the uniting principle of all lives.

Sunta hai guru gyani
Gagan me awaaz ho rahi hai jheeni jheeni
Sunta hai guru gyani

So says the voice and words of the Guru. The divine sound originates in the sky.

Paahi liyaye
Naad bindu se peechhe jamaya paani ho ji
Sab ghat puran guru rahya hai
Alakh purush nirvaani ho ji
Sunta hai guru gyani

The soul originated from “nada bindu”. “Nada”, the sound and “Bindu”, the seed. The “Bindu” represents the male while “Nada”, the female energy. So says the voice of the Guru.

Vahaa se aaya pata likhaya
Trushna toone bujhai
Amrut chhod chhod vishay ko dhaave
Khol de phaans phansaani ho ji
Suntha hai guru gyani

Your being arrived from there to an address in this world, to quench its own thirst – the desire for God. But putting nectar aside, you drink poison again and again. Going in reverse, you now toss and turn in your own trap.

Gagan mandal mein koi
Boi pe dahi jamaya
Makhan makhan santon ne khaya
Chhar jagat babarani ho ji
Suntha hai guru gyani

The celestial cow of knowledge, Brahman is milked for the benefit of everyone. Knowledgeable, wise men opt for the butter (spiritual knowledge) while the world out of ignorance are content with the butter milk.

Bin dharti ek ma daal deeje
Bin taruvar joo paani re
Gagan mandal me hoye ujiyala
Bol guru-mukh baani ho ji
Sunta hai guru gyani

Instead of seeing earth, see it as merely a sphere. Seeing a lake, understand it is nothing but water. When one starts experiencing the underlying unifying principle over apparent diversity and duality, knowing dawns. So says the voice and words of the Guru.

Oham soham baja baje
Tipu ki tham suhani re
Ida pingala sukhman nari
Sunata ja behrani ho ji
Sunta hai guru gyani

When this happens, all the questions like “Who am I” and “So am I” are answered. Ida and Pingala are pacified and Sushmna is activated, says the teacher from the sky.

Kahe Kabir suno bhai saadho
Jaag agam ke baani re
Din bhar re jo nazar bhar dekhe
Ajar amar ho nishani ho ji

Kabir says, “Listen, Oh righteous brother. Understand and experience and become one with the non-ageing and eternal one principle who looks after this entire universe every single moment.”

Sunta hai guru gyani
Gagan me awaaz ho rahi hai jheeni jheeni
Sunta hai guru gyani

So says the voice and words of the Guru. The divine sound originates in the Sky.
