Entering a Vibrant Space

Surrounded by the rocky Nandi Hills, vast open skies, and the bountiful beauty of nature, Isha Yoga Center, Bengaluru, stood in full glory, drawing multitudes of people dressed in white for the long-awaited Naga consecration.

As soon as participants entered the premises, the magnificent 112-ft Adiyogi came into sight, and the dwelling place of Naga shone right in front of him. The shrine was covered in an enormous black cloth that read “Naga Naga Nagendraya” in Kannada. There was something mystical and entrancing about it, and everyone seemed irresistibly drawn.

The air was thick with anticipation, split from time to time by a light rumble of chatter as people gathered at the dining area for their meal. The Naga chant filled the air, setting the tone and adding to this sense of expectancy. As the clock struck three, the participants joined in the chant, devoting themselves to the process in mounting eagerness to partake in the consecration.

The Consecration: Experiencing a Mystical Dimension

The next hour passed by in a whirl, and before long, everyone was seated in their bays with consecrated shawls wrapped around them. With sheer determination in his gait, Sadhguru walked toward the Naga shrine holding the rasa danda, an energized mercury rod that was going to play a central role in the Naga Pratishtha. Without further introduction, he commenced the consecration.

Sadhguru took the participants through a carefully designed process that included chanting particular bija [1] mantras while focusing on the corresponding chakras. In the meantime, brahmacharis applied butter, followed by turmeric, kumkum, and asti (consecrated ash) on the Naga, and Sadhguru performed an arati at the end of each step.

Then, Mother Nature decided to drench the crowd with a sudden burst of rain. A few moments of hustle and bustle ensued as participants rummaged through their bags for their rain gear. Some others braved the cold downpour, every descending droplet intensifying their receptivity.

Isha Foundation’s homegrown band, Sounds of Isha, infused the atmosphere with a specially composed “Naga Nagam Ashrayeham” song, chants, and thumping drumbeats. While some participants intently observed the consecration procedure, others had their eyes closed in rapture and just soaked in the powerful energies.

After 3 ½ hours of absolute intensity, the consecration process as such drew to a close. Sadhguru congratulated everyone, noting that everything was going as per the plan – “even the right amount of rain,” he asserted whimsically. He invited the participants to come closer to the Naga, touch it, and take a prasadam that they could apply on their forehead and the pit of the throat.

For the second session, Sadhguru arrived with an uninvited guest coiled in his hands. Everyone watched in wonder as he gently handled the serpent while addressing the crowd. He spoke of how serpents have been wrongly maligned for ages, and that it was our responsibility to change this perception. He said that even a venomous creature, if handled properly, becomes a divine possibility.

Sadhguru also elaborated on the significance of a widely misunderstood substance – mercury. About the copper snake that every participant received before the consecration, he said that offering it to the Naga was a means to enhance life, and therefore guided everyone to do so before leaving the premises.

Spiritual Infrastructure in the Making

Joyful cheers erupted when Sadhguru announced the upcoming consecrations at the Isha Yoga Center, Bengaluru, starting with the Yogeshwar Linga on 15 January 2023. He further disclosed that the future plans for the Center also include an Adiyogi Alayam and Linga Bhairavi abode, as well as the construction of eight program halls, with Bhava Spandana programs expected to start there as soon as June next year.

Sadhguru acknowledged the Bengaluru volunteers, the brahmacharis, and the construction team who had been working day and night to have the 112-ft Adiyogi standing in a matter of just 4 ½ months. In view of the upcoming projects, he appealed to everyone to go all out for the Bengaluru Center because it needs “everything that you got – your brains, your body, your hands, your pockets, your everything,” to make things happen.
