The Seven Chakras And Their Significance

Sadhguru tells us about the chakras or junction points of nadis, and explains the significance of the fundamental seven chakras.

Sadhguru: There is too much of chakra talk going on everywhere. Especially in the West, wherever you go, there are “wheel alignment centers” where they “align” your chakras and this and that. From yoga studios to chiropractics, everybody is talking about it these days. That has become the fashion.

Because it embodies movement from one dimension to another, it is referred to as a "chakra," which means “wheel” or “circle,” but it is actually a triangle.

There are 114 chakras in the body. There are many more, these are the major ones. You can see them as 114 junction boxes or confluence of nadis. These junctions are always in the form of triangles. Because it embodies movement from one dimension to another, it is referred to as a "chakra," which means “wheel” or “circle,” but it is actually a triangle. Out of these 114, two are outside the physical body. Of the remaining 112, only 108 can actually be worked upon, the remaining four just flower as a consequence.

The number 108 has manifested in the human system because it is a significant number in the making of the solar system. The diameter of the sun and the distance between the earth and the sun is 108 times. The diameter of the moon and the distance between the earth and the moon is 108 times. The diameter of the earth and the diameter of the sun is 108 times. And hence, 108 is significant in various spiritual practices.

The seven fundamental chakras

The seven fundamental chakras are known as muladhara, which is located at the perineum, the space between the anal outlet and the genital organ; swadhisthana, which is just above the genital organ; manipuraka, which is just below the navel; anahata, which is just beneath where the rib cage meets; vishuddhi, which is at the pit of the throat; ajna, which is between the eyebrows; and sahasrara, also known as brahmarandra, which is at the top of the head, where when a child is born, there is a soft spot.

Chakras have more than one dimension to them. One dimension is their physical existence, but they also have a spiritual dimension.

We can speak in terms of lower and higher energy centers, but such language is often and too easily misunderstood. It is like comparing the foundation of a building to the roof. The roof is not superior to the foundation. The foundation of the building is more basic to the building than the roof. The quality, life span, stability and security of the building depends to a large extent on the foundation rather than the roof. But in terms of language, the roof is higher, and the foundation is lower.

If your energies are dominant in muladhara, then food and sleep will be the most dominant factors in your life. Chakras have more than one dimension to them. One dimension is their physical existence, but they also have a spiritual dimension. This means that they can be completely transformed. For example, if you bring the right kind of awareness, the same muladhara that craves food and sleep, can become absolutely free from the process of food and sleep.

The Kshetras

These chakras have a manifestation in the body and they also have a subtler manifestation. These manifestations are called kshetras. Kshetra means a place where someone resides. You may be here, but your residence is somewhere else. Just like that, there are kshetras that are external ones, called bahya kshetras, and there are internal ones called antar kshetras. There is a home and a holiday home!

These chakras have a manifestation in the body and they also have a subtler manifestation.

When you are at home, you will be one way. Generally, the mundane occupies your time and life – cooking, cleaning, fixing - most of your time goes in this. When you go to your holiday home, even though there is cooking, cleaning and all the other things, the mundane does not occupy the whole of you. It is a more exuberant existence. A home in the mountain is supposed to be more exuberant existence, though it may be physically more taxing than being at home. Being at home is easier. Many people have given up and just stay at home because it's easier. The reason why you went to another home away from home is you still want to know the coziness of a home, you don’t want to stay in a hotel, but you want a more exuberant existence. The Creator provided for all that. You can be in the antar kshetra, not so vibrant and just sleeping, or you can be in the bahya kshetra. Any time you want to go back home, it's not a problem, you can always step back.

The second chakra is swadhisthana. If your energies are dominant in swadhisthana, pleasures will be most dominant in your life – you seek pleasures, you enjoy the physical reality in so many ways. If your energies are dominant in manipuraka, you are a doer; you can do many things in the world. If your energies are dominant in anahata, you are a very creative person. If your energies are dominant in vishuddhi, you become very powerful. If your energies are dominant in agna or if you attain to ajna, then intellectually, you are realized. Intellectual realization gives you peace. Experientially it has not happened yet but intellectual realization has come to you, which brings you to a certain state of peace and stability within yourself irrespective of what is happening outside of you. Once your energies hit sahasrara, simply like crazy you are ecstatic. There is no external stimulant, there is simply no reason, but you are ecstatic simply because energies have touched a certain peak.

Falling upwards

Fundamentally, any spiritual path can be described as a journey from the muladhara to the sahasrar. This journey is an evolution from one dimension to another; these are just seven different levels of intensity.

To move your energies from muladhara to ajna, there are many spiritual processes and several ways, but to move from ajna to sahasrara, there is no path. There is no particular way. One has to either jump or fall into a bottomless pit. This is called “falling upward.” In yoga, they say unless you are willing to fall upward, you won’t get there.

Fundamentally, any spiritual path can be described as a journey from the muladhara to the sahasrara

This is why so many so-called spiritual people have come to the conclusion that peace is the highest possibility – because they got stuck in agna. Peace is not the highest possibility. You can become ecstatic, so ecstatic that the whole world becomes a big joke in your understanding and experience. Everything that is dead serious for everybody is just a joke for you.

People come and stop there for a long time, just to make up their mind to jump. This is why in the spiritual traditions, so much stress was always laid on the Guru-shishya relationship – the master-disciple relationship – is simply because if you have to take this jump you need deep trust in the Guru. 99.9% of the people need trust, otherwise they cannot jump. This is the reason why so much stress is laid on this relationship, because without trust, one will never take that jump.

Thank you very much for the immediate reply, and I look forward to using your suggestion. I have also come across several 1 hour chantings done in you tube and I am curious if I could use them also? answer would be much helpful and appreciated. Thank you once again.

They taught us in middle school that hindu-ism is a religion. I dont remember much but Krishna & Vishnu are seen as Gods or Idols according to the teacher & textbooks.

If you mean the Vairagya 1-hour chants, then definitely yes, they will be very helpful.

oh...shambho!!!...what a jump it is!!!..all things become nothing.. it's all your grace!!!..Bow down to you

What are you trying to say? Is there a point you're trying to get across?

1 year 10 months ago

The linga bhairavi aarti suggested here contains chanting of only the lower 3 chakras which are lum, vum, ram, and yam. what about the upper 3 chakras should be avoid chanting the mantras for them? Answer would be much appreciated.

I seek your guidance in this last leap. Om Namah Shivaya.

Why does it matter? Western side has gotten most things about India wrong like Hinduism being a religion, but Sadghuru says otherwise. Are you a teacher?

1 year 10 months ago

We do not have information regarding this as of now. We will get back to you when we do.

(), "chakra's embodies movement from one dimension to another". What dimensions one can move to. Is it shift from pleasure seeking to doing to creativety to power ....? or what else I am not able to get it

2 years 5 months ago

The way I see it, you shouldn't get attached to terms like religion or teacher. A religion is a religion as long as someone sees it as a religion. It is a term, nothing more, nothing less. It is the way an outsider sees in. We all have truths that an other might call a belief. Where is the separation in subjective truth, belief and religion - or even in a way of life? As long as we're not one with the absolute, everything is subjective.

Am I a teacher you ask...? Depends a lot on perspective.

1 year 10 months ago

They are different, in the sense, for the Isha AUMkar - one needs to be initiated by a teacher and hence it is only taught at the Isha Yoga Center. The Nada Yoga cane be learnt by anyone online.

This might help you.

1. As we all know Indus valley civilization is one of the ancient civilizations in the world. The civilization is named after a river 'Indus', also called as 'Sindh', because people from this civilization used to live along side of this river. 'Hindu' means, a person who has born in the land of Sindh/Indus. So, it's clear that 'Hindu' is a geographical identity. When people of other religions from different parts of the world started coming to Indian sub-continent, they started noticing a special way of living and unique cultural values of Indus people which differed drastically with theirs. So, the immigrants happened to interpret that Indus people follow a different religion (Hinduism) and have a different culture. Also, it was necessary to create an identity to the Indus people for trade purposes. It is not clear if the identity was named by people of Indus itself or by the immigrants. British/ Russian used to refer the place of Indus people as India. Middle-eastern people referred India as 'Hindustan' (Hindu 'stan'-place, the place where Hindus live). Still, India is referred as Hindustan in the middle-east.

India- Indus, Hindu- Hindustan, does it makes sense?

2. Considering Hinduism a way of living I proceed. Now, coming to Gods/Idols part. There is no single God/Idol in Hindu culture. You may believe in God and be a Hindu, or you may not believe in God and still be a good Hindu. Yes, you heard it right. You can disbelieve everything and still be a hardcore Hindu. Hindus worship many gods and the number runs into millions. So you might ask, why not a single god? What's the point of many gods? Hinduism has peaceful gods, fighter gods, gods who represent money, gods who represent knowledge, gods of wisdom, gods who stand for love, gods who stand for bravery, gods who appear to be animals and birds and many other gods. But as we know Hinduism or any other religion says there is only one divine god and at the same time still Hinduism also believes in existence of many gods. Why? If you see any group people, you can find different kind of people and there exists diversity in their nature. One person might want peace, while other is aggressive. One might want to be brave warrior and other might want to stay away from battles. One person might seek for knowledge, while other person may not be interested in anything. Let's take an example, suppose if a person is a knowledge seeker, whom would he/she consider as the God/ Idol? Definitely, he/she would consider an Idol who is an ultimate seeker of knowledge. So, he/she considers Saraswati as the Idol form, the god of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom and learning. The god of love or the god of bravery may not be appropriate for me. I'm correct on my own way and you are correct on your own way. Hinduism acknowledges the diversity. This is why Hinduism offers a vast choice in terms of choosing god and satisfy each and every person. We may consider the literature of Hindu gods just as a theories of diverse characters, personalities and social values. We may also consider them to be Gods who exist for real, follow their teachings and make them as your ultimate 'YOU'. If you listen to the stories of Hindu gods, you can understand that no god is perfect in Hinduism, just like us. Every god in the stories have faced criticism and at some point have faced their Karma. So, its up to the people, either believe in one god or believe in multiple gods. At the same time you have a freedom to disbelieve in any god or disbelieve in every god and remain an atheist, but still be a Hindu.

Hinduism is all about finding the ultimate truth. Truth is relative. My goals are different from other people, so the truth I need to find to reach my goal differ from others. I being a scientific researcher, as of now I specifically didn't have to consider any one as my Idol/God. I really don't mind considering any godly character as my idol in future.

All these views are personal. Hope, this clarifies.

Due to severe anxiety, my muladhara has been damaged over the years. I have had all kinds of weird dreams of Earth quakes and foundation of my family being destroyed. How can I fix it again?

Wow. Thanks for clarifying. Sounds like a beautiful way to see Gods.

I have often had a bad perception of my solar plexus chakra for some reason a feeling that it was the "bad one" - and correspondingly since it is the doing centre) I have a hard time doing and procrastinate a lot even though there are lots of things I want to do. I am more of a thinker.

I want to put my energy there and become a doer for a while, even a year or two, just to finish all my unfinished products. But I don't know how to do it.

I don't know who to ask as most people who claim to know are just woo woo new age people with not first hand knowledge but who just say things they like to believe are true that they heard somewhere or made up. If anyone knows a reliable source of information on how to activate a chakra such as my solar plexus so I can become a big time doer for a while then please share it with me.

"The diameter of the sun and the distance between the earth and the sun is 108 times. The diameter of the moon and the distance between the earth and the moon is 108 times. The diameter of the earth and the diameter of the sun is 108 times."

Pretty interesting. Just checked these, and all the values do come up close to 108 (though the accurate values are 106, 115 and 109 respectively). Curious bit of coincidence.

Hey, I used to procrastinate a lot. For me the trick was to now when to stop. When to stop thinking when I am procrastinating, and how to stop doing when I'm overworking it. Postures and breathing techniques can help to do the transition. I don't believe you can just pop a chakra and magicly become a big time doer. If it blocks, it will block again, even if you find a person competent in clearing it. But by doing stuff and keeping balance and calming the mind and the heart it comes by itself. It worked for me though. Not going to brag about what I do but it does involve things like driving a motorcycle in the snow every day for 2h during winter for example. Would never have thought I would do things like that 5 years ago. But I'm doing it every day and it's pretty much effortless. Some days it's hard cause i'm not very well balanced. But most of the time it goes OK. It's not that hard, it's not that easy. When you contemplate what you're doing and when you're thinking, you realise there isn't that much difference between the two.Don't limit yourself. Being a big time procrastinator just as being a big time doer are two great things that are mutually beneficial. Now that you know how to rest, you'll know how to move and keep on doing it for a long time ! :) Just do it. step by step, brick by brick.. one chakra at a time

Draupady , ganga ,kannagi , bhooma devi ,
saraswaties . sitas , and other devies and other good peoples were
always and again and again insulted and were victim of cruielties and
crimes .and girls like taraka(tataka) and her mother and her souls were

accused and culprits and of cruilities ,why the girls like taraka
could not become good humans and peoples like others . why peoples
became so bad and wrong even girl and ladies insulted girls and ladies
,

Was kunti and kunti's humans and other souls were real
cuilprits , in the 2012 ,13 ,2014 were beaten and killed very badlly by
the gods like bharama , guru bhiraspati ,dakshina moorti , two goddess
might be ganga and draupadi and other gods like may be ram ,krishna ,
and others .of many mahabharata story of one kunty was mother of human
of taraka or taraka sister .according to
one story draupadi was boon/cursed by shiva of five husdands . kunti and
kunti's humans and other souls would had been culprits or guilty of
revenges .

Were putana , who tried to kill krishna by making
drink milk and other women ,like holika ,who tried to burn krishna and
other womens and others were culprits or were became the cuplprits of
wrong and bad traditions or bad karmas of karmas or some other
traditions

Why krishna ,rama ,shiva and others mahans elder peoples were good peoples and indras and others peoples were bad
crores and crores have been destroyed and are being buried alive under earths , throughwn into hells and made landless ,
why others peoles could not become good humans and good peoples

who were those peoples , which has been and being killed ,destroyieded ,
whose generations were , why were bad peoples , were really bad , why
could not became good peoples ,

Were rama and ravana were
enemy ? , if i am not wrong rama shakti and murgan and veerbhadra are
same avatars .(savarupnaga , ravana sister and sita might had been the close
relative) .
which
peoples would had some wrong and intercaste marrages . intercaste
marrages would had been the cause of quarrels there would had been great
conspirancies to kill the peoples. which were from the westren and
south westron parts of himayalas .in many stories of dakasa prajapati
story also many wrong and multy wifes and mishappenigs happened . (
peoples which had to make lifes good and better , used the criminals
,enemities and wrong ideas and methods for spoiling and destroying the
lifes )

Culprits and cruel peoples , who had done cruelities
on brahma and saraswati , and ganga and sita , ahiyilia , draupdi and on
many goddesses and gods ,and on good peoples ,

crores
and crores of peoples are being killed ,destryoed in such a way no one
can find out , and given different shapes and made to bad brains and
minds ,
genetical deshaped and disorded to lusty and bad brains and bad minds .
are made from single soul to multy humans souls to suffer and painful
creatures to never become humans and buried alive under earth and even
killed into stomaches and made to toilets and throughn into hells like
toilets
cause ----Culprits and cruel peoples , who had done cruelities
on brahma and saraswati , and ganga and sita , ahiyilia , draupdi and on
many goddesses and gods ,and on good peoples ,

{my views , which i found some what truth )my views may or may not be acceptable truth.}

Many ramayanas are there , like valmiki ,vashist ,kamb, ramanujan ,ramayanaa are few of many other versons of ramayana ,
what is the meaning of ramayana found ,– ramayana = ram +ayan ( ayan meaning came ) ,

according
to some stories ahyilyia was cursed by gotham rishi , Ahalya was
converted to stone ,As for Ahalya, Gautama granted her the boon that she
would be brought back to human form by the touch of the feet of Lord
Rama .
so rama avatar would had been made (incarnated) ,thus how many ramas would had been created ,

would gotham rishi would be knowing about rama avatar ?

like
ramayana so many ahilya versons are there ,( like in a verson , ganga
tells to gautam , it is mid night not the bath time go to home and see
some thing would have been wrong ) .

how many Ahilyas storeies
would had been made and how many gautams would had been made and how
many ahilyas lifes would had been spoiled ,how many indras would had
been made and how many girls/boys souls would had been made to sit in
hen or cock and make sound (cock crow) .thus how many would had been
made culprits ,sinners ,bad brains ,bad habituals of bad acts and bad
karma .
and those cuilprits , sinners are/would had been made to quarrel and killed in the wars of ramanyana .?

mahabharta
, would had took placed for the revenges and the cruelties happened on
ladies ( like savarupnakha ,sita ) . to show the cruelities ,gamblings
were played and sarees were made to removed

like ramayana vishvamitra story would have many versons and vishvamitras

mahabharata
would had been happened for revenges of ramayana and ramayana would had
been happened for ahiylia and what would be reason behind ahiliyia
insult was conspirancies or any ones evil idea .

really how many
would had been real culptits and how many would had been created and how
many would had been victims of vengences and eneyminities and how many
peoples souls would had been killed

killed peoples would had been
given births to different parents , differnt mothers ,different fathers
, and thus differnt marrages would had taken places in past birth some
ones mothers would had been wife of some another person .and some wrong
and illigal methods and would had been used like rapes for the birth and
for enemities and revenges .
thus quarrels would had been on increasing ,and peoples and souls became culprits and victims .
according
to one of the satguru video in the past arround 18 millions years 1.8
crores years ago and one of the papa ji ( h.l. punja ) video , arround
80 millilons years ,8 crores years ago some incarnations had took placed
and some wrong things and wrong marrages and wrong interchanged
childrens were given births by the other not by their husbands .
like this millions and millions peoples are accused .

( peoples which had to make lifes good and better , used the criminals
,and wrong ideas and methods for spoiling and destroying the lifes )

More than 99 % of peoples, gods ,souls had been inocents ,had not been
victims . if polatictics , conspirancies , crimanilites ,some wrong
traditions and some wrong rules of few from the ancient times would had
not been made.

why the wrong and mishappenings happened and
happenings from the very ancient times , why peoples went wrong for
wrong marrages wrong acts
Why the gods , devatas , peoples and
humans became wrong of bad wisdoms and wrong acts and bad karmas ,crores
and crores of peoples ,were all the peoples were bad .why became bad
instead of becoming good humans and peoplesfor examples of very few , link given below–copy & paste

What a coincidence of colours sequences of 7 chakras, Rainbow or sun light passed from prism and seen as colour spectrum are same in colour sequences i.e. VIBGYOR ! This supports the saying as "यथा ब्रहमाण्डे, तथा पिण्डे" i.e. what is in the universe ( ब्रहमाण्ड ) that is also in our body (पिण्ड ) !
