Guru Purnima Poems From Sadhguru
On the occasion of Guru Purnima, here are three Guru Purnima poems from Sadhguru, that are sublime, insightful and personal at the same time. The first poem is about the Adi Guru, the first Guru. In the second and third Guru Purnima poems, Sadhguru speaks of his own experience as a seeker, and the moment he received his Guru’s Grace.

Guru Purnima Poem #1
Sadhguru: Just after the Adiyogi Alayam consecration I was in a slightly intoxicated condition. Due to schedules and travel I could not do the needed preparatory work in the shrine and took the risk of doing the whole consecration in the presence of over 11,000 people. I bow to these people as they sat there like one being. Extraordinary sense of Devotion and focus. The combo of Mercury and Venom, handling it in such a situation got me slightly on the wrong side. Thought of finishing myself, instead let the Grace of Adiyogi wash over me and bounced back in Gratitude and determination.
Ascetics distance
The stoic stance
All this they bore
And He could not ignore
Seekers so intense
Broke his obstinate stance
Celestial sages seven
Strived not in search of Heaven
But to find a way for every human
To find a way beyond hell and heaven
They toiled for their race
He could not withhold his Grace
He turned his sacred face
To south to look upon their race
They not only beheld his divine face
But held the downpour of ultimate Grace
As the Beginningless One flowed
In knowing, seven sages overflowed
To release the world
From its crusted mold

To this day the sacred knowing flows
We will not rest until every vermin knows
Guru Purnima Poem #2
In search of Truth
I did the sublime and the weird
The Blessed Guru arrived
Had my knowledge routed
With his staff touched the spot sacred
Left me with this Madness infected
This Madness without cure
But is liberation for sure
When I saw even horrific disease
Can transmit with ease
I took the liberty
Of Maddening Humanity.
Guru Purnima Poem #3
Sadhguru: During the 90-day Anaadhi program at iii in Tennessee, a gusty lot of people gathered. They did a wonderful effort to raise their sadhana to a different pitch. We explored dimensions which are not just unusual – much more than that. And we happened to be there at a time when there was Guru Purnima. The most dominant factor of my life has been my Guru and nothing else. Even today in my mind – more than in my mind, literally in every crevice in my body and every pulsation in my system – it is just His presence which is the most dominant within me. Probably because of this, just about everything reverberates which is not me but way beyond me.
I did not see my Guru as a man who touched me, though his touch brought me to the highest level of experience – to a revelation of life and beyond. The old structure within me somewhere would not accept it unless it came from Shiva himself. In his compassion, my Master turned himself into that form. I do not know if this was his act – that he turned himself this way – or if that is how he really was at that time. But ever since, this has left me in a place where I do not have to make any attempt to know anything. Whatever I need to know, He and He are there.
On Guru Purnima, these five little poems tumbled out of me within a matter of 5 to 10 minutes. I am not a great crafter of words. It is just that without any kind of mastery over any particular language, through Grace, I managed to find some expression to what was happening.
Lost. Lost to life and death,
Both I did, but moved me not
A man who walks with a stick
Comes to me, the able-bodied one
Having seen birth and death
And all that life can bequeath
Still sitting dumbstruck,
Here comes the man with a stick
To have me struck
With his lightning stick.
