Thevarams are Tamil devotional songs composed by the Thevara Moovar or the Thevaram trinity – Thirugnansambandar, Thirunavukkarasar, and Sundarar. These revered poet-saints of the 7th century created a wave of devotion that swept across southern India. The singing of Thevaram is still practiced in the temples of Tamil Nadu.
This song, Madar Pirai Kanni Yanai, written by Thirunavukkarasar, describes how he beheld Kailash and the divine in the town of Thiruvaiyyaru. He says, “Shiva showed me the divine in forms so beautiful, I could never have imagined.”
