FEATURE STORY
Why the Same Problems Keep Showing Up in Your Life
Most people spend their entire lives trying to fix the world around them. Very few stop to ask whether they themselves are the problem.
The last time something went wrong – in your work, your relationships, your plans – what was the first thing you looked for? The economy. The timing. Other people.
But if the situation keeps changing and the problem stays the same, the common factor is you.
New place, same drama

Sadhguru: Most people do not even notice that the same patterns keep repeating in their lives. They move through the same cycles in different scenery and assume everything is fine. The last time something went wrong, you were in school. Then it happened again in college. Then in a job. Then in marriage. The scenery was different each time, but if you look closely, the same things kept happening.
The same problem recurring means you are the problem.
Compulsive behavior fundamentally arises from a sense of incompleteness within oneself. At its core, compulsiveness means something within you has become cyclical. Something inside remains unfulfilled, and the attempt to fill that void drives people toward external things.
People take to smoking, excessive talking, eating, shopping, or any number of other behaviors because they feel so incomplete and insufficient as they are. The compulsive nature runs through your thoughts, your emotions, your energy patterns, and ultimately through your very existence.
The only way to overcome compulsive processes within yourself is by becoming more conscious. Compulsiveness is simply the absence of consciousness – just as darkness is simply the absence of light.
For every form of compulsive behavior, the only real solution is consciousness. Compulsive actions, compulsive thoughts, compulsive emotional states, compulsive energy structures – if these are not broken, there will never be freedom. If your life has that quality – if the same situations, the same emotions, the same difficulties keep returning – you are not moving forward. You are going in circles.
Everything physical in existence moves in cycles. The atom, the planet, the galaxy – all of it is cyclical. But the moment you become identified with the cycle, your life process itself becomes cyclical. If you handle it consciously, it becomes a tremendous possibility.
Uncertainty is your opportunity

There are two ways to see the uncertainty in the world today: as a problem or as a possibility. If there were no uncertainty in anything, if everything in life were absolute and fixed, would you have any chance in this world? The previous generations would have established a certain absolutism about everything in life.
There would be nothing left for you to do, create, or explore. The only reason you have the chance to do anything in this world is because everything is not already determined. Uncertainty is not really a problem. It is the solution to your life.
If there were no uncertainty, you could have a brick for a brain and it would not matter. Only because you do not know what comes next is your mind worth anything at all. How you handle uncertainty shows the level of your intelligence and your flexibility.
Uncertainty is not really a problem. It is the solution to your life.
Flexibility is the essence of life. Those who can bend will not break. Not just physically – in every way. You must know how to be in strong winds and how to be when things are flowing. Those who cannot adapt get broken.
If you stay young, uncertainty stops being a problem. It becomes the very condition that keeps life open. And if you are not dead, you are young enough to do that.
The difference between looking and seeing

Instead of thinking about what the right thing is, you must simply look. You should not look for anything in particular – this is the important thing in life. You do not look for this or that, because the nature of the mind is such that once you have an intent in your look, you will see only those things.
A photograph is about memory. A mirror is about reality.
If I am identified with anything – if I think you are my friend, my son, my brother, or something else – then I do not see you. I see what I want to see. If I am not identified, if I simply look, I see you exactly the way you are. If you want to walk through this world with the least amount of friction, you must see it the way it is, not the way you want it to be.
If you have your own accumulated stuff filling your mind, how will life reflect clearly? A photograph is about memory. A mirror is about reality. Whatever you do, you must see things the way they are – not by memory, not by grand ideas or intentions, but for what they are right now. If you do not see clearly, your actions will be wrong, inappropriate, and irrelevant.
Never become the problem in your own life

There are a thousand problems in the world. If you have no problems in the external situations of your life, it means you are not doing anything significant. If you are doing something significant, there will be a hundred problems.
But I have made sure I am never the problem in my own life. My intent is that you, too, should not become a problem in your life. If you are doing something worthwhile, there will be impediments.
The question is – are you yourself that impediment? That is what you must remove. If you remove this impediment, clarity will arise. You will see things as they are.
Every day you must face a new problem – that means you are growing. The same problem recurring means you are the problem. If you are the problem, it will always be the same problem. You should never be a problem in your own life.
There is no use in repeating the same mistake, crying about it, and then repeating it again. Many people live in exactly this mode – lamenting the same things while continuing to do the same things. If you genuinely recognize something as a mistake, you should at least be making new mistakes.
At a minimum, your problems should grow in complexity. If you keep making the same basic mistakes throughout your life, that is stagnation. It is time to evolve.
Someone else may think you are a problem – you cannot always help that. But in your own life, make sure of this one thing: that you are not the problem. If you do this one thing, you will have a successful life.
