This week’s episode features Dr. Kiran Bedi, India’s first and highest ranking woman officer who joined the Indian Police Service in 1972. She worked with the United Nations in New York as the Police Advisor to the Secretary General, in the Department of Peace Keeping Operations. She represented India in International forums on crime prevention, drug abuse, police and prison reforms and women’s issues.
Dr. Bedi has received many prestigious awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Suryadatta National Award, the UN Medal, and the President’s Gallantry Award. She has been voted India’s most admired woman by the Week, most trusted woman by Reader’s Digest and Navbharat Times, most admired Indian female icon by MSN, and one of India’s ten women icons by the Economic Times.
Dr. Bedi is the founder of two NGOs, Navjyoti and India Vision Foundation, which address prison reformation, drug abuse prevention, and child welfare. She was also a part of the nationwide “India against corruption” movement.
