How We Can Meet Young People’s Needs
Truth is like a straight line. But most people, youth or otherwise, are going all over the place. How well life works for you simply depends on how often you touch the straight line, or how close to this straight line you are. If you can stay on it, you will become something else. If you cannot stay on it, at least stay around it – still wonderful things can happen to you. This is why Youth and Truth – to experientially know the fundamental nature or the truth of our existence. This is not something you can grasp intellectually. But questions are the only tools that the intellect has to probe, so we are using questions.
Right now, our education system is all about marks and qualifications to get a certain job. Putting them in a classroom and grinding them with some stupid information from the textbook is not going to work for the youth. They hardly have any other activity. It is very important that as much time as we invest in science and mathematics, we also invest in art, music, and theater. These kinds of expressions are very much needed.
We need to offer the youth something that excites them and involves them. It could be sports, dance, music, a book, or an intellectual activity, but something that draws them, excites them, and demands involvement. Right now, when there is no involvement in anything, intoxication seems better, naturally. We can teach ways where you can always be intoxicated, from within. If you look at my eyes, I am always completely stoned, but never touched a substance.
This human system is the greatest chemical factory on the planet. You can manufacture what you want from within. This kind of intoxication will liberate you, not inebriate you. Inebriation means it will take away your faculties. When you intoxicate yourself from within, with life itself, then instead of inebriation, you will become intense and intoxicated at the same time. This is what Shiva or Adiyogi symbolizes – he is intense, exuberant, still, and intoxicated at the same time. This is the essence of yoga. If there is no sense of intoxication, you cannot really bear with life.
If you take on many things in life, they will slowly pull you down, unless you have a little bit of intoxication within you, all the time. But if you choose bottles and pills to achieve this, it will destroy you. It will destroy your intelligence and your faculties. We have to give the youth an alternative. Instead of telling them that something is good or bad, I can teach them how to be intoxicated twenty-four hours a day. And it does not cost anything. It will enhance your life in many ways. Meditation means to create a little distance between yourself and your body, between yourself and your mind. It is a sense of abandon. Only when human beings touch this sense of abandon, will their genius flower.
Unfortunately, we are going to a place in society where money and pleasure are the only goals. It is not that one should not have these things, but they should not be the focal point of our lives. At the same time, it would be wrong to conclude that if something is profound, people will not listen to it, or that it will not be heard. Yes, if you titillate their surface, more people will immediately go for it. But if something is profound and you put it the way they will understand and identify with it, people will also go for it today, which is absolutely fantastic to see.
I have been travelling to schools and colleges. I can understand that college students are interested, but even a whole lot of schoolchildren between twelve to fifteen years of age are listening to spiritual talks these days. This was impossible when I was growing up. There was no way we would have heard a spiritual talk without being forced by our parents. Now, wherever I go, schoolchildren know me. By themselves, they are listening to my talks. It is not true that if you say something profound and transformative, people are not willing to listen – they will listen. Maybe how we say it has to change, but the message can be conveyed. I think every influencer has the responsibility to not only touch people’s lives but also transform them in some way.
We need to bring this responsibility to people around us. For the wellbeing of the country and the world, human beings need to behave a little more responsibly – with their words, their actions, and everything else. What we are doing in the form of Inner Engineering or Isha is a movement from religion to responsibility. For too long, people have been pointing towards the sky for everything that is going wrong with their lives and all the dastardly things they are doing, saying, “It is God’s will.” It is time people take responsibility for whatever nonsense they are. Every human being should have the courage to at least take responsibility for what you are. Stand up and say what you have to say. Whether someone likes it or not is their choice.
As all of you know, we are in a movement called Youth and Truth right now. Let’s get the youth to the truth, as much as possible. This is a youthful nation – all we have is population. If we transform our population into an inspired, balanced, and focused population, we will be a miracle. Otherwise, we can make a disaster out of ourselves. We have the tools of technology, we have comforts and conveniences that no other generation ever had. No one has ever been as empowered as we are now. It is my endeavor that this becomes the best generation ever. Let’s make it happen.
